Pre-War K-22 Outdoorsman - mostly
I've been itching for a K-22 Outdoorsman and finally adopted one. From reading other posts, and comparing serial numbers, my K-22 Outdoorsman (649xxx) is late 1934 - early 1935. As can be seen from the pics, my Outdoorsman has the wrong grips Aside - I think my left and right grips are not even a matched set. The left one has a square shoulder and the right one a contoured shoulder. I believe the correct grips would be pre-war service grips with silver medallions. I would really like to return my Outdoorsman to its original appearance with some period correct S&W grips. I've looked but can't find any original or accurate reproductions on the internet. Any suggestions?

Long time for a first post
First thats a great looking Outdoorsman. Looks almost new.
You can find K frame service stocks on Ebay if you give it some time. Since your gun is so nice you will want the same condition stocks. They should go about 100-150
Of course you could also consider some nice stags or bone grips. They look great too.
Just bought a bone set and some wood service stocks in the last two weeks. Both from guys on this forum. (Hint)

This is what you are looking for.
They can sometimes be found on eBay or GB. Or you might post a WTB add here on the Forum. I have a couple pairs, but I don't want to sell any of them. Sorry.

Yes. The top panel shown is the immediate postwar style (1946-1952). The bottom panel is from the 1953-1967 period.

Nice pick-up. Stocks are a very personal matter, but in this case I wouldn't worry about it, since nobody is going to notice. Even if an observer were expert enough to spot the difference, he's only going to see one side, right?
Once upon a time I had a beater commuter car that had two different types of wheel covers on it when I bought it. I just swapped them to side-to-side instead of front-to-back, so unless you walked around the car checking it out you'd never know.

You are probably correct on dating. I show on my list two in the SN 649xxx range which shipped in 1935 and none quite that high which shipped in 1934. But at that time, one cannot reliably know the shipping date without a letter as gun sales were very slow during the Depression. The silver medallion round top service grips are correct for the 1930s but you might not be able to find a nice pair in the $100-$150 range. You might get lucky on eBay, but good ones don't show up every day.

Thank you for your welcome, comments and suggestions. I have taken the advice above and posted in the WTB section. So far nothing correct on e-bay or GB.
Also thank you for confirming and dating my mix-matched grips.
Last, about being a member for over 2 1/2 years and this being my first post, yea, you noticed that huh I'm going with the guarding the space ship story.

Well if you have anymore Smiths as nice as that I hope you post more often.
Grips will pop up. Might be a couple of months.
I always keep an extra set around in case the next find needs a nice pair of shoes. I always find them.

Thanks for the support. I'll keep watching the auction sites. Who knows, perhaps someone will respond to my WTB post on this site.

Glad it worked out. One of the great perks of hanging out with a bunch of like minded guys on here.
Look forward to the updated pics. Course now you need to find a box of prewar 22 ammo to prop that gun next to.
