Another 38/44 HD
Stopped by one of the LGS and this caught my eye. Is it worth $699.

Very nice. I bet you can't wait to shoot it. I really need to find one of those.

Assuming the other side looks that good, I would say yes.

Hopefully you know the Heavy Duty was never sold in that presentation case nor was it ever sold with those smooth presentation stocks. You could sell the case and stocks and use the money for the correct box and stocks.

It sure looks nice, and should be worth $700+ all day long. If the stocks fit your hands well, you may want to just keep them on it, and originality be hanged. Ditto for the really nice box.

I say refinished too. The cylinder and frame aren't the same color, and it's too bright for a post war HD. Would be interesting to see how the side plate fits. Check to see if it will chamber a .357 round. It shouldn't.
The presentation case with tools, and those stocks would probably generate 300 bucks or more which would get your net cost of the gun down to the $400 range. Then figure dropping up to $150 for a high condition set of period correct magnas....
Your decision....

All day long IMHO. Refinished hurts collector value, but the 4" presentation case (which looks very nice) and the presentation stocks (also look very nice) make up for it. Grab it before I cross that old state line and snatch it.

No, I would not pay that amount for that set-up.

If left up to me, I'd likely sell off the stocks, case, tools to pay down the purchase price, put some decent magnas with T-grip (or other suitable grips) and enjoy it. Just my opinion.
ETA:
If mechanics are good but finish is re-blued, I likely wouldn't want $700 in it even with the extras. Once again, just my opinion.

The grips, tools and box are worth 400 dollars. That means you really only paid 300 dollars for the gun.
That's a good deal for it even if it's refinished.

it's sort of a glorified, high class robogun. A little of this, a little of that. If you like it, buy it and shoot it, and sell off the extras.

I brought it home regardless of the refinish. .357s do not fit the cylinder. Here is a picture of the other side and it with my other HDs. The 5" was my grandfather's deputy sheriff carry gun & is from the 30s, the 4" with the Wonder sight is from 1955, and the new to me is from 1956 (s/n S154xxx).

Yes indeed, it looks really good to me.
If you want to sell those stocks, shoot me a PM.
