Default Where would one shop for a correct box pre 27

What does the correct box, papers and tool, set look like for a pre-27 1953 era. Where would someone attempt to buy one and are they marked for the pistol? What should I expect to pay if I do come across one?

By chance and happenstance is where they are found. Sometimes on the classifieds here, sometimes on Gunbroker, sometimes on E-bay, sometimes at yard sales, sometimes at auctions, sometimes at high end on line gun auctions. The Pre 27 would have been in the Gold Picture box, and correctly sized and marked for the correct size of the gun. A particular marking on the back of the box in grease pencil would most often be the S/N of the gun that was in that particular box. When you find one it won't be cheap, depending on the condition of the box, from $250 for a squashed ratty box to $500 -$700 for a nice one.

Often times finding the gun you want is much easier than finding the box. Sorry I can't show you a picture, as I don't have one for my 3 1/2" Pre 27.

You could post in the WTB section of this forum, ebay, gunshows, or the other gun auction sites. Gold picture box for a 357 magnum is price dependent on barrel length and condition of the box. $100 to $400 for the box - Tools another $100 to $200.

Thank you for the suggestions and reply. The hunt now begins. I think I will press the LGS to contact consigner or possibly give me contact info to see if he has it laying around somewhere.

Does this look anything like what would be on the front of the box? It is bonded to the outside of the gun rug that the pistol came in.

No - that is a transfer stain on the gun rug from a later model S&W box.

There is but one "correct" box, and yes, IT is marked for THE (original contents).

Bottom Line: There are boxes, and there is THE box.

Ralph Tremaine

And as an aside, Gary Lowe ("glowe"??) can transform a squashed ratty box into whatever you please---anywhere from brand new to old, but all in one piece and well cared for. I wouldn't be surprised to learn he could make one from scratch!! That too won't be cheap, but exquisite workmanship never is-----nor should it be.

Be aware that there is a seller of fake boxes from Sparta, TN (that he falsely claims are authentic) on eBay and Gunbroker. See this thread - Beware; Fake Smith Wesson boxes

Nobody with any integrity would buy anything from this seller.
