The best guns are those handed down from father to son, no matter what they are. Congrats, you have a real 'winner'!
By virtue of it being a Model 32 pre dash # pegs it as built on the New I frame forging which began with the Model of 1953. The serial #812XX indicates it is currently the earliest Model 32 stamped Terrier in my database and from early 1958.
And you're correct, it wasn't built on the New J frame forging (there's no Improved J frame model) until Jan 1961 which is designated by the -1 stamp.
The Model 32 on the New I frame forging and New J frame forging , both introduced in 1953 have the same grip frame size, and the stocks are interchangeable. But the frame window lengths are different, the J frame still being longer.
Shoot and enjoy!
