Curious about another police marking
Saw what appears to be a blued Pre-model 10, M&P 38 at a LGS this past weekend. I did not have my readers on, but it was old enough to have the wording on the top of the barrel and has the bulbous end on the ejector rod.
It had a fare amount of wear on the sides of the barrel, probably from holster use, and some rust freckles here and there. But two interesting things to me:
- it was a 5 inch barrel, which was probably more prominent back in the day
- it has a police department marking on the backstrap with a #. That was UPD nnn.
Any ideas on what police department would start with a U?
The guy wanted $575, which I thought was a tad high.

Reason: correction - it does have the bulbous ejector rod end

Sounds like a well used duty revolver. I may be way off but At $575.00 I would pass on it.
Thinking about it, unless I had a dire need for a truck kick around gun, anything over $300.00 and I'd pass.

Utica (NY) Police Dept? Could be? $575 does sound a bit high, to me, but I have not seen the gun or know the Sn. There is all ways some wiggle at a shop. Best

Thanks bigwheelzip. For the fun of it, I emailed the general contact email address given out on the Utica PD website asking them if they have a historian or anyone that specializes in the department history to see if they have any info on those old guns. I doubt I'll get a reply, but you never know.

Update: I did make contact with an officer with Utica PD. He told me there are no records that date back that far. But he said there might be someone in the department interested. I took some pics and sent them to him along with the gun shop info.
The Serial # on it was 6508nn

My UPD is marked on backstrap just like yours. You may already know that the grips are later replacements, but the gun looks like a nice one if not reblued....can't really tell from pix. Mine is in 80-85% condition with original service stocks. I purchased it with factory letter for $500 a year ago and was happy to add it to my police revolver collection. It is very likely that your gun was in the same shipment as mine. Ron

The picture gets a bit fuzzy upon enlargement, but given the spacing I suspect what looks like a dash is an unrelated ding and you've got a straightforward # 118, which sequentially fits with Ron's .
