Help ID early 44 s&w special
LGS has a poorly nicked .44 S&W Special for sale at what seems kinda high to me. Is this a pistol I should consider?

If it times and locks up well and the price is right, I would consider it.
What are they asking?

It would have to be priced really good for me to consider that one. And I love the third models. It's a shame they nickeled the hammer and trigger. And the front sight really hurts it for me.

$1 shy of 1K. Cycles good, but lock up is a little sloppy.

It has a non-shrouded ejector rod, so it must be a second model. Too high at $999 but you can always ask for a lower price if you want. Many of these were refinished after long and faithful carry in a lawman's holster.

Your right Alan, somehow I totally overlooked the missing shroud. I guess my eyes were diverted elsewhere.

Thank you all for confirming my suspicion of asking price. The front sight, has it been altered other than plating?

Yes, front site should be half-moon shaped.

That would be a solid "Nope" from me. If it were around 400, and mechanically very sound, I'd probably get it as a shooter/conversation piece.

$999? No. Way.
That's a tough sell at $350 around here.

"...for sale at what seems kinda high to me"
And that's being optimistic.

Keep in mind that 5" 2nd models don't grow on trees. If it was original it would be a good one. But its not, and its not a bargain at that price. If it was a 4", factory original at that price it would be a steal. But its not. Put me in the group that says don't buy it. Let someone else enjoy it for that kind of money. Or leave your name and phone number and see if it sits long enough for them to cut the price in half.

Continue to shop around.
I got lucky on this lizard.
Found at a small Texas show last year and paid $350.
Second Model turned into a third by the factory
with a little Texas history.
Like the one the OP pictured..no clue about the front sight.

Definitely not worth $1k, but why not offer $400 and see what happens? To anyone that can find a working pre war 44 priced less than $450 I'd say congratulations on the hen's tooth and suggest buying a lottery ticket.

Topic drift but. . . .interesting that the hammer and trigger are nickel. We're usually assured that S&W would not nickel the hammer and trigger. Guess that could have been done after the gun was refinished and returned by S&W in 1946. Wonder if S&W would nickel the hammer and trigger if requested by the customer? Anyway, nice gun, and I would have been a buyer at $350 too. Enjoy.

That might be a King or similar vintage front sight.
