Default ID and Information Help Highway Patrolman

Hello! Will you all be willing to help me identify the S&W revolver in the pictures below. I'm going to meet the owner about a possible deal. He said his father carried out for years as a county sheriff but doesnt know a whole lot about it. These are the pictures he sent. I'm guessing the serial number might be on the butt of the frame and unfortunately these are the only pics he has right now. Let me know what you all think and if there is any info you wouldn't mind providing I'd certainly appreciate it. Thanks!

My only comment is that it is a re-blue. And not a very good job at that. Notice the plum colored barrel and cylinder and dished screw holes.

Good luck with it.

Thank you! I noticed the difference in color between cylinder, barrel and gun and asked him if it had ever been rebarreled or different cylinder and he said it's all original. The assembly numbers match on the frame and yoke. What value could you estimate on this one if you dont mind saying?

Well, its been buffed so hard the S&W logo is gone completely from the side. If I was selling that revolver, and someone offered me $300.00, I'd be on it like a duck on a June bug.

Hope this was helpful and good luck.

Shooter at best. The trigger shoe doesn't help it, but the buffing/reblue are a serious no-go. Could be a good shooter, but there are better HPs out there.

I'd say that if you NEED to have a shooter now, $400 tops. But every now and then you hear a story of someone finding a really nice one for $500...so maybe keep waiting.

Thanks guys! i have 3 model 19s in various conditions, a pristine no dash 66 and also and awesome nickle 27. I shoot the heck out of those 19s and my 586 as well. I just didn't have a 28 or a highway patrolman and this one is probably mid 50s and beat up but still character. I'll probably pass on it as i dont like the reblueing and especially the logo buffed off... Thank you all for the help and info!

I have a cherry 28-2 from the late '70's that I paid $500 for last July. It's not a 5 screw but it's almost perfect.

I'd be willing to pay around $250 or maybe $300 (tops) for it as a shooter if it is in good mechanical condition (tight, no push off, good timing). One you could shoot to your hearts content and not worry about dinging or scratching it up.
