Default New purchase - K22 Combat Masterpiece; pre-18

Just purchased this new K22 CM pre-18. Serial # K 1988xx which I think dates it to around 1953? Nice 5 screw and goes well with a 4 screw M&P pre-10 with 4" bbl. This one came with nice Magna grips that are modern (no diamonds) so I put on these from Altamont. I think they look good and the quality is high. Thanks to all in the forum for aiding and abetting in what apparently may be a new addiction! Steve

It really needs a set of original "diamond" Magnas, but the Altamonts do look nice. Congratulations on your purchase and forthcoming addiction.

"K 1988xx which I think dates it to around 1953?"

K175,638 – K210,095...1953 (manufacture)
On my list is K1990xx, a CM shipping in 11/53.

How come every time I see a pre 18 it looks like the barrel has been cut down and a new front sight pined to the front of the barrel. Makes me wonder if the pre 18 even exists ? Did S&W use a cut down barrel and pin the front sight on at the factory before they came out with the one piece barrel and called it a 18 ? And if so what percent of these were actually done by gunsmiths on there own.
