Default Old 22/32 HFT shooter

I try to collect M52's, M41's and Old K22's but they have been scarce at the Texas gun shows lately so I picked this little shooter up. I thought the price was OK and I didn't have one.
Numbers match including the grip, although the Bluing is maybe 20%.
The only part that's not original is the front sight blade. I'll try to find one in Tulsa this weekend.
George

Congrats. If you don't mind my asking, what was the sale price? I've got one fairly similar that I'm thinking about letting go and prices for these are tough to nail down.

Good buy.

According to the serial # it could be the original front sight although I can't see it that well in the photos. It would be a Paine bead front sight with w/U-Notch rear sight blade.

• Aug.29, 1923 change order, replaced the original Paine bead front sight w/U-Notch to a Patridge w/square notch rear.

Thanks for the info. Here's a picture of the front sight blade. It looks to be fabricated from brass. The U Notch rear sight has the matching SN under the leaf.

The Paine sight had a brass bead only. The factory sight blade would also be numbered to match the gun.

You're right, not factory. If nothing else, all the dings around the retention pin give it away as being changed out. Originals can be found if you want one.

Still a nice gun that's accurate and fun to shoot with SV ammo; the chambers are not recessed for the new high velocity stuff on the market.

Jim,

The serial number looks to me like 441xxx. Wouldn't that come with a Patridge front sight and square notch rear ?

Bob

Hi Bob,

Model52guy's statement that the rear sight had a U notch and serial # matched the gun, clinches it for me that it came with a Paine front sight and was likely assembled early for its s/n and not too long after the Aug.29, 1923 change order date. But could have shipped anytime after that.

It's truly hard to make any definitive statements with these Smiths. There are just too many variables:

Old style parts vs. new style parts not installed in numerical order
Guns not produced in numerical order,
Guns not stored in numerical order,
Guns not shipped in numerical order.

Therefore, the shipping date, although easiest to obtain, holds little value or importance for me. Nor does serial # cutoff dates for changes except as a very general rule of thumb. To me the features on the gun are the closest form of dating it's actual production.

All,
Thanks for the interest and the excellent information. Roy Jinks answered my ship date request today, the Ship date is August 1926. Here is a picture of the rear sight. It is Serial numbered to the gun.

Not to hijack this thread, but when I come across a factory letter with a name in it, I gotta check it out.

Found Floyd Daly. According to the 1930 census, he ran an electric shop.

And now back to the regularly scheduled thread ...

George,

Now consider this: on the same date as the sights were ordered changed - Aug. 29, 1923, another change order was issued for a stock change:

• Aug. 29, 1923 change order, replaced .22/32 HFT single screw square butt RP convex top stocks, returning to 2 screw target stocks as standard but with convex tops, and w/o medallions.

Your .22/32 has the change to the target stocks but not the sight change yet. A perfect example of the fickleness for the length of time for engineering change implementations.

A .22/32 HFT in my database, #441727 – shipped Sept. 1926, is the earliest known with both Patridge sight and target stocks change.

Jim,
I guess it's true, never say you know for sure, with S&W pistols.
So, with the U notch rear sight, it will be a Paine bead front sight I'm looking for?
