What do I have?
I picked this unit up at my local gun store today. They said it was a 1905-4th Change but weren't sure. Can anyone of you kinds folks help me out with its identification and maybe value?

To IDENTIFY your Gun > Please go to this link above and furnish the information requested. Then we can probably get pretty close.

Welcome to the Forum. If you could provide serial number from the butt and barrel markings that would help to get the ball rolling. Looks like it might be a 1920's vintage M&P from the photos you posted. Ron

Ser. # 185XXX Barrel markings are Left side 38 S&W SPECIAL CTG.
Right side as follows: Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA
Pat'd March 87, and then several patent dates that are difficult to read for old eyes

It looks very much like a pre-1923 M&P, judging from the style of the grips and lack of the MADE IN U.S.A. frame stamping. A serial number would pin down the date more closely. In that condition, I hope you didn't pay more than maybe $200-$250 for it.
---------------------------
Ser. # 185xxx would suggest ca. 1913. I show SN 1846xx shipping in 6/13. Except the grips are too new for that date, they are of the 1920s-decade style. It would indeed be a Model of 1905 as it has a square butt. Collectors would consider it a third change, S&W did not use "changes" in its nomenclature.

The timing and lockup are great. Thought for $180 would make a good truck/woods gun

It will be fine for your intended use, but you should stick to using only lead bullet standard velocity loads. The cylinders were not heat-treated for extra strength at that time. $180 is OK for a shootable-condition K-frame, even if it is a beater.
