Default M1917 Main Spring

Anyone know where to find a new mainspring for an M1917 Army? A friend has one and tried a used one from Numrich but is still having light primer strikes in DA. I gave him Jack First's website today...

Any other thoughts?

He may need a longer strain screw.

I asked him that and he said that he tried that to the point where the trigger got more difficult to pull. SA seems to work fine, though.

Well, that seems to be the answer. He needs to tighten that puppy on down. Most of the 1917s that I have handled had a bit stiffer DA pull. I believe that is because the original half moon clips had a bit of give.

Sometimes when you know you have a good spring and correct for the gun and still get misfires, check the tension screw for signs of being shortened.

When all else fails, a fired primer with the anvil removed, stuck over the end of the tension screw is all it takes.

Here's a few to try:

Good sources you probably use already are E-bay and Gunbroker. Set up a search for "smith wesson parts". Some listings are kits of used parts that are usually from guns destroyed by law enforcement with some to all of the parts except the frame included in the kits. You can generally win the entire parts kit for the price of the part that you want if you had bought it new.

Post an adv on this forum under the classified section.

Have used the spent primer extension and it worked splendidly. A very much appreciation mark on the Parts List. RS
