Reworked Hammer Spur for a Friend
In short, I was asked to rework a broken hammer spur for a friend. The spur was broken a few years ago someone managed to drop this little beauty right onto the spur, at which point it naturally shattered, leaving a jagged spur. S&W service let me know that they could not replace a hammer from before 1960 and Numrich did not have a replacement either, so a rework was in order.
I managed to file the spur and sand it to look as though it had a factory edge, and then did a small spot of Case Hardening to give it the original look, like the rest of the hammer and trigger... I think it came out top notch!
Let me know what you think.

Very nice work. Of course, I would have finished the job and removed the spur completely, but that's a whole different thread.

Looks good and should function fine. Don't think anybody just thumbs the very tip anyway. But, I would have gone ahead and taken it all the way, but that is me. I don't single action my carry type guns.

The post 1953 .32 and .38 S&W I are interchangeable with the same vintage J frames up to 1961. And after that all three J frame hammers interchange.
Pre and post 1961 hammers will also interchange if you just match the spring strut; ball tip before and forked tip after 1961.

Thanks! Some very good information right there.
This particular handgun was produced in 1956 according to its serial number. The service tech at S&W let me know that they have no hammers from 1960 or older, and that is all I have to go by.

I have done the same to a number of Chief Specials. Something about the balance makes them land right on the hammer spur when dropped.

Other possible sources of hammers:
Good sources you probably use already are E-bay and Gunbroker. Set up a search for "smith wesson parts". Some listings are kits of used parts that are usually from guns destroyed by law enforcement with some to all of the parts except the frame included in the kits. You can generally win the entire parts kit for the price of the part that you want if you had bought it new.
Post an adv on this forum under the classified section.

Hondo44, you never cease to amaze, my friend! That is the best list of S&W parts sources I have ever seen assembled in a single set anywhere, anytime! Thanks for yet another great contribution.
To the OP, I would probably at least look casually for an undamaged replacement just because of my selective OCD. On the other hand, I'd probably end up taking the original hammer (which you did a great job on, by the way) and removing the hammer spur completely to make the gun a DAO for very smooth CCW but have the option of going back to "original" with the 2nd hammer I would have acquired. Of course it's your friend's gun, so it's really up to him what is done with it.
Regards,
Froggie

It is an Emerson CQC 7 BW. It is hard to tell, since the picture cuts off the Emerson Wave feature. The CQC 7 is the best knife and probably last knife I will ever own... Love It!

Hondo44, Thanks a million for that supplier list. I have made a document out of that info.
You are the man!
