I was fairly certain I'd never own a Registered Magnum
As one who is more accumulator than collector, I often thought about how it would be nice to have an RM, but never thought I'd ever find one at a price I could justify.
There was a thread the other day where the OP was asking advice on looking for an RM, so I was looking to see what was advertised to determine if there were any "reasonably priced" RMs around. I cam across one in a Cabellas Gun Library. Original price, $4999, but just marked down to 39 cents under $3000. I had just sold several pieces and had a commitment from a friend to buy a couple others. So, two 32 Colts, a 1905 S&W 38, a Colt Police Positive in 38 S&W, and a 1903 Springfield, and a few hundred cash and I'm the proud owner of a factory refinished, barrel changed, trigger guard ground RM, that was originally shipped to the New Hampshire State Police shortly after the unit was created.
I never would have justified the price for a prime specimen, so I'm pleased with my less than perfect, "affordable" RM.

Congrats on your new RM! I think that's a great price for the gun.
Are the pictures from Cabela's? They're pretty fuzzy so I can't really "see" the gun.

What a wonderful find and a great addition to your collection. Truly a revolver that was used and modified to improve it for it's intended use. Quite honestly I prefer one that has a history of use by men who carried it and depended on it to protect both them and their friends and neighbors. All my very best, Joe.

I sent a request to the NH State Troopers Association to see if there was any way to learn to whom it might have been issued. It has a factory rework date on it and I'll request information from the Historical Society to see if there's anything to be learned from that.
Didn't realize that the drop box link worked so here it is again.

Looks redone right too.
I'm sure you will have that gun breathing fire by the end of the weekend.

Congratulations on a gorgeous, working RM.
I'm quite sure I'll remain in the camp of the title of your OP, but it's nice to know persistence pays off.
Ever since I read the DB Wesson Scrapbook I've coveted an RM. I, too, appreciate the mods made for a specific person, and along those lines (can't tell from the photos, although they're great), whether the trigger guard was relieved on both sides or only on the left -- left-handed shooter? I'll be interested in knowing if it was done on both sides.
Cheers,
Bob

Bob, it is only relieved on the left. I too thought it might have been a left hand shooter. I also thought it could have been damaged, hence the changed out barrel, and was ground for cosmetic reasons. May never know.

Robert,
What is the S&W date stamp on the frame left side?
Mine has a date, I think sometime in 1945, stamped on left side frame under grip.
I was informed that the later records are still in the process of being digitized by the SWHF, and we'll get notified so we could request additional information on our guns.
The following from Bill Cross:
"We are in the process of completing the documents in the period, 1946 to approximately 1968 (mainly invoices along with service records). We will then start on the war years, 1942-1946, that should include service records and possibly what was done to RM 698. However, these records won't be available until around the end of 2017.
Bill"

Good for you Forum friend. I was in the same boat until this past December. Never figured I would have one. I have on occasion wondered if we put to much importance in owning these RMs? Then I realized I only felt that way until I got one, then OH HAPPY DAY!!
I know you probably don't believe this but I am almost as happy for you as you are. Enjoy!!!

Thanks for clarifying that. Beautiful job on the relief. Subtle. I like it.

Never say never, you won't find and own one.
I swear I'd never own a all matching numbered military rifle. Just sitting tight for decades I found two in one month. I had to clean off the bottom of my shoes. Luckily I had the cash in my pocket both were half priced of the going rate. I said I'd never seen one too.

Cool, so according to what Mr Cross told me, they may already have the necessary docs digitized for review.
Have you already sent the request for this info?

Congratulations on your purchasing the registered magnum. Some days your the bug and some days your the windshield. If my wife ever caught me spending $3K for a handgun she would probably have me committed. All kidding aside you did extremely well. My wife most times goes with me to gun shows to keep an eye on me. Spotted a 24-3 lew horton 44 special in a dealers case @$750. Thought I had it made as I paid for it and was doing the paperwork. Shows up just as the dealer made the phone call. So being the truthful being that I am I told her. Then she said you paid $750 for one handgun?. Heck I dropped $700 for the 6.5" barreled 624 just a few month earlier. Think she was in shock. When on the way home I did take the time to explain that S&W used to make these guns in limited numbers and were hard to get. That kinda took the fire out of her. I keep all the bills and postal money orders of stuff I've bought over the years so when she goes to sell them after I'm gone she won't be taken by some guy taking advantage of a widow. Frank

Glad to see that Registered mag got a good home.
I recall seeing old Providence Rhode Island Police .44 Specials with ground trigger guards on the left. I believe it was done to fit a holster of some sort. Maybe someone else can chime in on that.
