Welcome, and thanks for making your request easy to answer .
This is a .38 Military & Police revolver from late in the 1910 decade. The same basic gun was first made in 1899 and it is still in production today, after 5-6 million units total. Hope this is helpful.

It is a .38 Military & Police revolver. It probably shipped in 1919. Serial number 316648 was assembled in September of that year.
Pictures. We like pictures!

Obviously Cav read the sticky notes and follows directions. Well done! Sure made it quick and easy to help him.

Easiest to just attach them. "Go Advanced" button below the quick reply window, then "Manage attachments" button and follow prompts. Up to five pictures, works from computer as well as smartphone.

In pretty good condition for its age. And the grips are probably correct, showing little wear and abuse. On my list is SN 3074xx which shipped in 7/1919.

.38 M&P model which most likely shipped in July of 1919. I'd say, depending what part of the country it's in, it's a $450 - $550 gun. Nice piece!

I would offer $400 and tell him he can shoot it when ever he wants.

If you check the right grip panel's backside, you may find the serial number there in pencil; it could be really faded, sometimes a high-power flashlight held at various angles reveals it, which would confirm that the stocks are original to the gun. However, absence of the pencil number doesn't mean they're not.
If you do get it, I think based on the second photo (unless it is a weird effect of the lighting), the chambers can use a good cleaning .
If it were just on sale somewhere, I wouldn't pay more than 350 to 400 either, but I would pay 500 to keep an heirloom in the family.

Oh, and your spelling of "heirloom" was correct.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! I agree with the above $300-400 estimates. S&W made beaucoup M&Ps so they aren't scarce. Also, that'll give you enough to invest in an historian's letter ($75) to find out when it shipped and to whom. Could be you'll get lucky and it shipped to a family member.

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.
If I saw that revolver in the local shop with a price of $300 I wouldn't give it a second look. But for a family heirloom I'd pay double that, never give it another thought, and never miss the extra cash. It's priceless.
My two bits,
Bob
ps: eager to know if the serial number inside the right stock matches.
