Identify an Older 38 S&W Special
This is an older revolver with no model number.
It was either chrome or nickel plated but mostly chipped off now.
It has a round butt and the old style straight main spring.
Fixed sights and the SN is 162042

It is a 38 M&P.
In the mechanical evolution of the K frame, it is a 1905-3rd Change.
However, someone will be along shortly to tell you that you have to call it a Model 1902 because it has a round butt. That's an inside joke......

If the grips are missing, you want round butt K frame black hard rubber ones. It would have shipped sometime around 1910.
I had to go back and look again. There are no barrel stampings.

162042 indicates that it shipped in 1910-11. It would have been called a Model of 1902 at that time, as it has a rounded butt. The Model of 1905 was pretty much identical but had a square butt.

Welcome to the Forum.
S&W still uses the same mainspring in the larger frame revolvers.
BTW, I LOVE the way the round butt revolvers fit MY hand.

Ok , we've been here before , bit I STILL do not understand how the revolver in question can be a model of 1902 if it does not have the rebound spring present in the grip frame. Efforts have been made in the past to explain this to me , but (butt) I still don't get it. Seems to me that the mechanics of the 1902 and 1905 are distinctly different.
"The Model of 1905 was pretty much identical but had a square butt." The two appear dissimilar to me.
Observe the image of the 1902 and 1905 side by side and comment , if you so please.

The 1902 has a round butt and the 1905 has a square butt. S&W ads of the era showed this difference. Later, when the factor dropped the '02 and '05 labels, the ads showed the offerings as the Military & Police, with a choice of a round butt or a square butt.
My understanding is that collectors came up with the 1st Change, 2nd Change etc labels, not S&W.
