Default Some I frame information

I was looking for a set of service grips for an I frame and was shipped 2 sets to chose from. Both sets fit but when using the grip screw it would not touch the other side of the grips set.
I tried both screws with same results so I measured each set
pressed together off the gun and found the following:
set serial # 58394 .940 thick
set serial # 59401 .872 thick
set serial # 63663 .805 I already own this one
set serial #115308 .735 these are magna style that come on 38/32 that I am looking for service grips for.
It appears that S&W reduced grips as serial numbers increased.

Have you tried pushing in the nut on the opposite side grip? Sometimes these work their way out in shipment, and so when you insert the screw it doesn't catch. This happened to me a couple of weeks ago with some Detective Special grips.

I may not understand what your looking for:

Sounds like you need a set of round top service grips for a # 116208 to replace the Magna style. Right?

A #116208 .38/32 should be stamped a Model 32 (rd butt) or 33 (sq butt) and it's built on the J frame in the late 1960s.

The rd top service grips were not made for the Post model 1953 New I & J frames which are the same size. About the best thing you can do is cut the horns off of a set of post 1953 New I frame or New J frame Magnas (again they're the same size).

Or you can also fit a set of pre 1953 rd top RP stocks or 2 screw target stocks to your rd or square grip frame like these:

Or did I miss something?

Here is I frame 38/32 with grips that fit the best. The other pair were to wide for either grips screw. Serial number 57210 shipped October 1950.

Here is 38/32 as I found it, The magnas #116208 fit perfectly

Both of those Terriers are post war Transitional I frames with 6 screws.

The serial # of 116208 is a real anomaly. In my database the highest Transitional Terrier is #585XX shipped in mid 1951.

Are the gun and the magna stocks both numbered 116208? They are post 1968 stocks w/o the center diamond. They were not made in the 1/8" shorter pre 1953 I & J frame size. They would have had to be shortened to fit that transitional model.

I read those as # 115308.The backs do not have finish on them from the factory.

They've been refinished and had to be modified. All it entails is sanding off 1/8" just from the butt. Very easy and can be undetectable once re-finished. But the butts of those are not straight; clearly have been sanded.

Are the two gun photos above the same gun, #57210?

Notice the difference between the line at the bottom of the checking on the diamond stocks compared to the line on the non diamond stocks. The line on the diamond stocks has quite an upward curve whereas the non diamonds have almost a straight line.

I don't have them with me right now, but when I get a chance, I'll measure the stocks on my two Terriers from the early 50s. This is the kind of stuff that makes our avocation so interesting. We learn new Smith and Wesson stuff every day.

Best Regards, Les
