Assistance dating a .38 S&W special CTG M&P
I'm trying to find the manufacture date for my grandfathers .38 special CTG. The serial number is B 2845xx. Thanks for any help.

Only B prefix I know of is the Model 61. Doubt it is that one.
My guess is you have a .38 M&P Hand Ejector change 4 from around 1917 - 1919. But just a guess.

Are you getting that number off the butt? Sometimes, people post other numbers, generally just assembly numbers.
Sometimes, a B means the gun was shipped as a blued one or been factory reblued.

I'm guessing you got that number from underneath the barrel. The B designates the gun was blued finish when it left the factory. Your .38 M&P with serial #2845xx most likely shipped Nov/Dec 1917. Now, where are your pics??

WWI ended on Nov.11, 1918. Was S&W shipping commercial M&P's during the war?
During WWI, the US Govt. took over the factory and ran it, dissatisfied at the rate that S&W shipped M-1917 .45's. Would they have allowed commercial production of other models?

Not mandatory but it sure helps in identifying. But you really do need to post photos when you have a nice looking revolver like that one.

Beautiful for 100 years old !
S&W wasn't heat treating the cylinders then, only shoot standard velocity lead .38s. Wadcutters are great.
It'll be fun too shoot.

Educational info -- your grandfather's revolver is not a ".38 Special CTG". That's what fits in the cylinder -- the.38 Special CARTRIDGE.

There are records of occasional commercial revolvers shipping in 1918, M&P as well as Regulation Police. We've had lettered guns shown here. I think the assumption usually is that they shipped from pre-war inventory.

Some much better S&W collectors on here have stated that the 1905/1902 designations went away around 1913. S&W started calling all of these guns M&Ps at that point.
