Default Another K38

Today I received a four screw Model 14, no dash, from 1959. I thought I was going to stop looking when I found the five screw. Now I guess I have to start looking for a nice three screw. I'm also looking for a nicer side plate for the M&P target.

I'm going to take the three amigos to the range tomorrow.

Edit: I didn't mean the M&P is a K38.

Very nice. The Four Screw model looks like a brand new gun!

I love the model 14 variants and you've got a couple very nice ones. Don't get too excited about finding a replacement side plate for the M&P, though. According to conventional wisdom they are not only hard to find but most likely need to be hand fit to the frame. Think gunsmith. I'd work on locating a better pair of proper stocks for the old one.

Actually, the M&P Target is more like a second cousin to a K-38. The first cousin would be the M&P Target of 1946, in that it shares the same sights.

You'll be forgiven if you don't run right out and snatch up one of those. I know I was when I saw my first (and only) one----and didn't bring it home. "Did you get anything?", asked the Boss Lady. "Nope, but I saw one I'd never seen before---and had been thinking I had to have." "Why didn't you get it?" "Well, the fellow who had it had paid $20,000 for it; so I figured he'd sell it for some more than that----and besides that, they're even more ugly in person than they are in the books." "Oh, well life's too short to have an ugly gun." "Yep, I figured you'd understand."

I had to research the M&P Target of 1946. Wow! That has to be the ultimate collector's gun, at least as far as 20th century S&Ws are concerned!

A five screw K38 has the distinction of being the first centerfire gun my daughter ever fired (a couple months ago). S&W .38s have to be the biggest bargain in gun collecting right now. Everyone is going ga-ga for the magnums and Colt snake guns.

The nonrelieved stocks on the 5-screw are awsome. If football diamond targets are the correct stocks for your 4-screw I have a set if you're interested. I have an early 70's 8 3/8" that would look good with yours.

The hand writing on the wall for me was (or at least should have been) back in the late 90's---maybe early 2000's when I had decided I absolutely, positively HAD to have one----and called Jinks.

"What should I expect to pay for a nice Mexican Model?", I asked. He laughed, and said, "Well, up until the last Tulsa I'd have said $3,500; but now all bets are off!" He went on with the tale of a Southwest Bunch member who had brought one for show and tell: It seems another member there had one at home---and it was numbered consecutively to the "show and tell" gun----and he HAD to have the "show and tell" gun.

Let the bidding begin!!

The bidding stopped at $15,000---when the owner of the "show and tell" gun declined that offer---and the bidder either ran out of money or was overcome by an attack of good sense.

I wish I had been there. I would have liked to have seen the gun----and the bidding---especially the bidding. That would have been one of those deals where you didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
