Default Chasing down a Wolf & Klar

A friend just lettered his 44 HE of 1926 as having shipped to W & K on 1-29-1930. Is that where the trails stops? Are there any W & K shipping records left? We know this gun was owned by a local LEO. Local and family sources say it was owned by another LEO that served in this area in for over 30 years, beginning in the 1920's.

W&K was a distributor in Ft. Worth. W&K sold guns, also as a gun distributor supplied other dealers throughout the southwest. Just because S&W shipped to W&K doesn't mean that W&K sold it to the public.

To answer your question, YES, the trail stops there.

Bill Powell claimed to know where the records for W&K were. If he did, he took the secret to his grave.

I have a 1926 .44 that went to W&K in the first shipment in January 1927. Fifteen years later, it was sent back to S&W for a refinish and new grips. At that time, it belonged to a barber near Pikeville KY. I'd love to know how it got from Ft Worth to eastern Kentucky.

Probably by car, truck, or train, possibly by wagon or horseback, or even airplane, doubtfully by foot.
No charge for the enlightenment.

The interest has been generated because of a number of writings by a family member about the last LEO owner. They refer to his "bone handled 44" numerous times.

The gun we have is of the correct time period and has stocks as described.

Bill Powell and I discussed the W&K records many times and Bill always said he "was in touch with the family, etc" - Personally, I think Bill may have been enhancing his story, as he was known to do sometimes! What we really know is that the S&W factory records for the shipments to W&K's Model 1926 orders, are not reliable , as the shipping clerk(s) at that time would list a multiple gun shipment - like, say 50 guns, as all one configuration regardless of multiple configurations in the shipment. If your letter says you have a blue, 5 inch, and your gun is a nickel engraved 4 inch, with no evidence the gun is not original in that configuration, - don't despair ! Have Roy pull the invoice and it will match your gun! Shipping records be dammed ! Ed.

I have a 1938 S&W 38/44HD. I know it was shipped to W&K in 1938. The rest of the revolvers history is just speculation. I am currently speaking with the family of the person's name engraved on the revolver but have yet to get hard proof of it belonging to the engraved name or it could possibly have been done in his memory. The name is WG Burden. He was a sheriff in 1896, Bertie co, NC. The owner of the revolver who had a brief letter done by R Jinks told me the story he got from the person he bought it from said it once belonged to a sheriff in NC. From this small bit of info, I started googling all I could until I came up with what I've found. The picture of the plaque was sent to me by a Bertie co historian. Due to the Burdens date of birth, 1847, and the shipping of the revolver to W&K in 1938 makes it slim possibility it belonged to him. My best guess is it was done in his memory. From all I've read, seems I'll never find any records of who this revolver was sold to from W&K unless a one of the Burden family remembers who had it sent to S&W for the refinish in '74. Enjoy the pics.
