My First 5 Screw - A .45 Cal. Model 1950
I've been waiting several weeks for this gun to come off the pawn ticket at my local gun shop, and finally got the phone call today. It's not in the greatest shape, but since it's a 5 screw, it puts it at least pre-1956 I believe.
Here's a view of the right and left side as well as the left side grip. By the way, the grips are numbered to the gun, the right grip is stamped with the serial number in two lines, minus the "S".

This is the worst part about the gun, some pitting on the frame, just above the trigger.

Some additional photos showing overall condition. The forcing cone is perfect, bore is like new and the lockup is like a new gun. I suspect this gun was not fired very much.

I'm very happy to have this gun. It's really very nice!

Poor soul is right. Whoever it was, he had to be pretty hard up to let go of such a treasure. It sure made my day though!

At least the "like new" old war horse has finally landed in a good spot!
I love 45acp in a revolver, such a great round, lots of lethality but very mild recoil.
Congrats on such a fine find. You did goooood!

Thank you! I'm really looking forward to getting this one out to the range. Also looking forward to acquiring some Auto Rim to play around with in the future. I've never loaded that round.

45 AR brass is hard to come by. Have 2 or 3 boxes but just use 45 ACP with half moon clips as there is a lot of that around.

45 AR brass is not at all hard to come by, if you have a computer and internet link. Maybe it's hard to come by in local stores.

Congrats! That's a rare bird. S&W only made 3,976 of them altogether from 1951 to 1966, when they discontinued them. I have S94954, April 1952.

Nice pickup! It's a great way to get into the world of 5 screw Smith & Wesson revolvers.

That is a great find and you will enjoy shooting it. As stated by another poster, this model is somewhat rare and not seen a lot. I have always felt that this model and the 1950 Target 45ACP were under valued for what they are. Finally, in the 4th addition of "The Standard Catalog of S&W", the values are much higher than in previous editions.

Great pickup. I have S1098xx which shipped in Aug. 1954...condition is not as nice as yours, though, as it has some holster wear.

The extractor star looks as if somebody was extracting empties w/a screwdriver. Aside from that, it's a gem - ya done good !

Looks to me like you got yourself a beauty, 45 ACP in a heavy frame revolver is the perfect piece for us older guys, not alot of recoil but plenty of accuracy and knockdown when needed. 45AR is tough to find at local stores but the brass is readily available from Starline and if you do not already reload it would be the perfect cartridge to start with. I switched over to 45AR after getting bit by the .45 revolver bug, I consider moon clips a waste of time and effort plus just one more thing that can go wrong at the wrong time. Best of luck with it and have fun...
