Reg 4693 - Range Day
4 May range day. This thing is sweet! The gold bead really helps out too. This was all at 10yds in single action first then double action in the second pic. Apparently this lefty pushes it up and right. The RM definitely made the 1905 feel dainty and I was way better with the large frame + magnas.
Took the Victory out too. This was a fun 38spl day.
________________________________________________________________________
Drove 3.5 hours each way to do some serious trading but I'm glad I did.
The '76 Camaro I traded a few years ago for a small arsenal has definitely paid off as the subsequent trading has led to some fun S&W's.
Pictures are below. It was sent back to the factory in June 1950 but the diamond is pretty lightly stamped. I'm pretty sure it got its reblue at that time. The screws are perfect and the pins are proud. The stocks are about 800 off as best as I can tell from the stamp. It's tight as a drum and the action feels great.
Just for reference I traded the SP1 and the 44HE 2nd I had in the Classifieds as well as an IMI Uzi Model B 9mm with all the accessories and 2/3 of a 45ACP conversion kit, and a Kel-Tec PMR-30. The other side seemed happy and I'm definitely happy to own a Registered Magnum!
Here's some quick pictures. I'll definitely request a search for additional documents and then try for some better pictures at some point.
Serial: 57508 Reg 4693

Nice catch. It shipped about a year or so later than I would have expected.

Nice Catch!! I was watching that one and thinking about it. If I didn't already have one I might have gone after it myself. Nice configuration too with call bead. Range report to follow soon I hope!
You should get S&WHF to check records and see if they have any other documents. No cost if they don't have anything. Good luck!

Congrats!
Every S&W collector should have the opportunity to own at least 1 RM in their lifetime. It took a while to find mine, but I haven't regretted the time, effort, or dinero yet
Are you going to shoot it? Both of mine are really fun to shoot (and I think that is more than half the fun of owning one). The RM's sure did have a great amount of time spent to make them the pinnacle of the S&W product line at that time and it shows!

Thanks for the messages. I am also a little curious about the later shipping date. All those KC RM's and NRM's shipped out well prior to this one. I figured these were all made to order and would thus ship out right after final fitting but perhaps this one sat for a while?
I do plan on shooting this as soon as I can find time to get to the range. The refinish makes it look great but means I have no guilt when shooting it.
The S&WHF request will be going out shortly.

That was also my thought. Maybe they pulled out an older frame from the pile when yours was assembled.

That makes sense for the serial, and this is my lack of knowledge on the process, but does that mean the reg numbers are pre-stamped with the serial? I assumed the reg number is stamped once ordered and assembled but that doesn't explain this later shipping date.

Copy all and thanks. So that example is a later serial but an earlier registration number, which lines up with a batch of frames waiting for assembly. I guess what I'm still wondering is at what point in the process they stamped the registration number? I'd understand if they're stamped as the order comes in for the next RM, but then I'd figure it would ship right out to the customer who spec'd that revolver and thus registration numbers would tend to be shipped more sequentially than other serialized S&W's.
At this point, I know there's a long list of literature I need to catch up on to get better educated on these. I'm looking forward to my SWCA application being processed so I can read through the various articles listed in other threads.

Still tempting, but I think I'll hold onto this one for a bit...
Here's a few more pictures. I never thought I would have a chance to own either of these pistols and I now have one of each.

The answer to the question of serial numbers "out-of-order" has always been because S&W ran a low tech inventory system. There was no reason for the factory to obsess over making guns in order. All N-frames were the same until a frame was turned into a revolver(not a pistol!). The registration number would only go on after the frame became a 357 Magnum.

Copy all, thanks for explanation. And I guess I never looked up the formal definition of 'pistol' to know pistols have a chamber integral with the barrel. Learn something new every day.

Sam Colt called his products Pistols. But we all know he was dead wrong, don't we?

Sam Colt....
was a genius but he died before there were any semiautomatic pistols created. Thus he was not concerned with distinguishing revolvers from other types of handguns.

Lloyd17- Hey don't bother taking any more pictures. Just send the bill, i will pay it and you can send the gun to my FFL.
Now wouldn't you like to stop spending so much time on a gun?? LOL!
Also Lloyd17, it looks like you were a Naval Aviator? I was a Aircrewman for six wonderful years.
