Welcome to the Forum.
Are there any letters in front of the butt serial number, such as a "V", a "C" , a "D" or a "K"? Are you measuring the barrel from the front of the cylinder to the end of the barrel?
Pictures would be helpful.

135223 (no letter prefix) suggests that you have a .38 Hand Ejector, Model of 1905 (second change), shipped ca. 1909-1910. The correct factory grips would be the pre-1911 style, round top with a flat-concave surface, checkered wood, and no S&W medallion. A nice pair of original grips from that time period will be tough to come by, but you can keep looking on eBay. Yours is a K-frame and about any grips shown as being for a square butt K-frame should fit OK.
I do not have a picture of those grips, but someone will probably post one. I believe the barrel may have been shortened, as I am reasonably certain S&W did not make any with a 3.5" barrel.

That is a much newer M&P revolver, post-1947 pre-1956 (likely 1951). There must be a letter ahead of the SN, probably a C. And the barrel does appear to have been chopped.

Ok thanks for the info.
You are right as i was wondering why the blueing on the barrel was gone with a brown patina probably from soldering the sight on.
Glad its a free gun probably not worth anything. Tho it does shoot good.

Even with a cut barrel, if everything functions properly it would probably bring $300 or so as a shooter.
