Default Pre model 14 value question

I looked thru a few other threads here but couldn't really find what I was looking for as far as value.

I was snooping around my LGS yesterday and found a pre model 14 in about 85% condition (1952 5 screw). The gun has been shot quite a bit judging from the cylinder movement. I know model 19's pretty well as I have several but I'm interested in buying a model 14 shooter. They want $650 for this gun and I think it's a bit high. I asked if they would take $500 but they said the price was firm as it was a consignment.

Was $500 a reasonable offer or was I low? I'm not seeing how they can get $650 for a gun in that condition.

The gun's owner is being very optimistic if the condition is as bad as you describe it. I'd be hard put to make even the $500 offer you put in for a K-38 that badly worn. Just because a gun is a desirable model doesn't make it valuable if condition isn't sufficiently good. It has to be very rare before condition gets trumped by desirability of the model.

Just my 2¢

Well, the finish is worn and there is some end shake in the cylinder. Also there is some play in the rotation. None of this is excessive but still there. I have two high condition model 19's, one I purchased new about 30 years ago, so I know what a gun should look and feel like with minimal use. I'm certainly not a collector but not a novice either.

I'm seeing some pretty high prices for these on GB but those are high condition guns. They must be the darlings of the model 14's.

Thanks for the input.
