Pre 29 five screw 8 3/8" barrel
Saw an interesting pre 29 today. It had an 8 3/8" barrel. It had the wrong grips on it. It was completely covered with dry oil. I started to buy it but was hesitant because it did not have the serial number in the injector rod housing. If it had had the serial number in the injector rod housing or barrel I would have probably bought it. I would rate the gun in the 90-95 percent condition wise, could be better when cleaned up. So my question is did they make any five screws with the serial number not on the barrel and what would be a rough value? Sorry I could not get any pictures. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also did the make any five screws with 8 3/8" barrels? I do remember that the first part of the serial number were S 62.

No 44 Magnum with a 5-screw frame and an original 8 3/8-inch barrel is known. The earliest ones with this barrel length were shipped in late 1958 and have a 4-screw frame. Some early 44 Magnums with a 5-screw have a replacement barrel of this length. The revolver you looked at could have a serial number in the S162000 range, but not in the S62000 range.

Are you sure it was a 5 screw. There are no known 5 screw Pre 29's known. There are 4 screw Pre 29's without the serial number in the ejector rod housing. The serial numbers of the Pre 29 5 screws run from approximately 130,000 to 177,000 with an S prefix. Check the gun again.

As information...The most famous 5-screw 44 Magnum with an 8 3/8-inch barrel belonged to Jeff Cooper and appeared in many of his articles. It was originally shipped on May 8, 1956 with a 6 1/2-inch barrel. The longer barrel was probably added sometime in 1959 or later.

It's value is as a shooter. Assuming it functions well, I would value the revolver at around $750 (since it has incorrect stocks).
