Default Pre model 26 in 45 colt

Hi
One of the scarce guns from the 1950 is the pre model 26 chambered
in 45 colt. The information lists this is one of 200 made. I don't think
that there were 200 made because we don't see these very often.
I would like to know if any members on this forum have one of these.
The ones that are correct will have 45 colt on the side of the barrel, and will be a 5 screw frame with a serial number between 1950 and 1954.
Be aware that they are ones that have been made up from parts.
I am only interested in ones that letter is a 45 colt.
Thanks for any help on this

I don't have them any longer, but I have owned three over years. Two from Mr. Brazille and one from Mr. Carroll. S97767 and S101698 are serial numbers of two of the three.

Jim,
I agree with your assessment. I can only recall seeing 10 or so of these in auctions or on the forum over the past 6 years that I've been collecting .45 Colt S&Ws. Nearly all of the auctions were Mr. Carroll's. My thinking is that there was probably <100 made, and the 1950 Army in .45 COLT is probably <10-15. That's what excites me about .45 S&W's...they are all scarce to rare in relation to production figures. I also think that there were much less Pre-26 .45acp made than the Catalog suggests.

Hi
Thanks for the update my serial number is 99232 I got mine in 2005. I also have one of the 1950 in 45 colt it was a special order with a 45 acp cly. per Roy Jinks letter it is the only one he was lettered.
I believe you are correct on the Pre 22 my guess is 10 or less.
I will start a data base for these two models. If you don't want your serial number known just send me a pm with the number I do not put names in the data base.
Thanks
Jim

Thanks Tom for the information on the pre 26 and the copy of the letter.
If I get enough serial numbers I will do a Journal article on these.

Mine is a higher serial number (S161997) and shipped in Dec 1956 with a red ramp and bright blue finish. All I have handy right now for a picture is the letter.

Did someone on the forum buy lot #3287 (m.1950 45 Colt in box) at the May 7 Rock Island auction?

Mike Tait (RIP) had one as new but no box, originally from Ray Brazille SN: S99667. It sold to another member in December of 2015.

I have a friend, who is a member here who has one - I've seen it.

The seller he got it from had no idea what it was - just thought it was an old .45 he wanted to get rid of.

Maybe he will see this post and share what he has.

I don't remember the publication, but I do remember reading something on them that stated a number of them were shipped to Cuba, doubtless during the Bautista regime. That would help explain why we don't hardly ever see them.

Pre 26, .45 Colt S/N S99673 shipped May 14, 1954 to H.H. Harris. Also a neat ad from September 1954 American Rifleman for "The Trading Post", Batavia NY, offering these revolvers for sale at $84.24. They even noted the limited availability of this model at that time.

Finally got some pictures of mine from 1956 that I posted the letter on earlier. I`d found it by pure luck on a table at a big show labeled as a pre model 25 and wasn`t sure if it was original with the unusual caliber/bright finish/ramp sight. I went ahead and picked it up for a price that was probably high for a put together parts gun but cheap for the legit .45 Colt 1950 it turned out to be. I have to admit that part of me was disappointed when the letter verified the original configuration because I`d been thinking about what a cool using gun it would be if it didn`t letter so I could have it cut down to 5 inches without messing up an original gun. I guess I`m stuck with it like it is now...

Well I can certainly trade you a 5" 25-7 .45 Colt to shoot and I can save this one for you? This is the .45 Colt missing in my collection if anyone is looking for a new caretaker.

Jim, I have one of these now for about 15 years. however. It does not have the box or SAT and has dia. Targets. I will send ser.# later I believe that whatever the production number was, I believe they all must have been shipped to Ray Brazille, judging from these posts. Got mine from him as well about 15 years ago. Thanks for getting a thread started on a very scarce gun and memories of Ray, a gentleman in all my dealings with him.It is a little humorous to think of all the great S&WS that he moved that Sharps buffalo guns really had a special place in is collecting spirit.

You guys never stop amazing me. Not only do you find and display rare examples, but, rare examples in pristine condition.

I am a big fan of the S&W 45 colts and knowing guns like those in this thread exist gives me hope that someday I will come across a premodel 45 Colt in shooter grade.

Be ever vigilant for you never can tell what is in the showcase or lying on the table. I have a transitional 44 Target I almost missed on bottom shelf in the back wearing pachs an wound up buying for $250.00 cause the clerk thought it a 50 Target. Make no mistake, it is shooter grade but I don't care. Many years later saw a transitional 38-44 Outdoorsman with sequential see.#. They sleep side by side. So, be alert. Today ma be your day.
My 45 Colt, 50 Target shipped in 54 to Rex Firearm along with 6 others just like it.
