Pistol Identification and Information Help
I'm looking for an identification on a S&W pistol my grandfather recently passed down to me. It was his old duty-gun when he was armored car security. I have done some research prior to posting on this forum and my best guess is that it is a pre-model 10 but I'm new to all this so I could be way off. The gun is a hand ejector S&W .38 Special with a 4" barrel and fixed sights. The serial number is C 397387. I have included pictures with this post in case I'm missing anything. Also, any additional information (what ammo to shoot, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.

1954-56 pre model 10. Looks like a beauty. They started in 1948 with C1 and ended in 1967 with C999999. In 1968 the prefix became a "D".
.38 special will work fine.

Yes, it is a so-called "pre-Model 10."
I show C3797xx and C3888xx that both shipped in 1957, the first in January, the second in June. I suspect yours also shipped that year.

That seems to be a beautiful and beautifully kept Smith and Wesson Military and Police. It's from after WWII, and I'm sure that there will be experts along soon who can give you a pretty close date of shipping.
But if you only had to have one gun, that would be a pretty good choice.mstaple of police departments all over the world for years. Use regular .38 Special ammunition, and enjoy it. It will serve you well, and is a wonderful family heirloom.

Welcome to the Forum.
Sorry to hear of your loss. Your revolver is a .38 Military & Police from about 1954-1956. Yes, it is considered a pre Model 10.
Standard .38 special (158 lead bullet at 850 fps) will do fine.

C 397387 almost certainly shipped in 1957. The closest SN on my list is C 4023xx which shipped in 9/57. As it was made just prior to S&W's use of model number designations (which started around SN C 437xxx), many collectors would call it a pre-Model 10. But S&W called it the Military and Police Model.

For a 60-year-old gun which your grandfather carried as a duty gun, this revolver is in superb condition. Just very moderate holster wear around the muzzle and a thin turn line, otherwise the finish and stocks are in great shape. He obviously took very good care of it.

Thank you to everyone who helped with an ID on my grandfathers gun. As for the condolences, he is alive and well. He had to get rid of his guns because the police state that is Westchester County, NY wanted him to take a medical exam to prove he wasn't too old before renewing his pistol license. Sent an intimidating letter threatening confiscation etc. Nothing like taking guns out of the hands of the people who need them most.

I don't know where you live, but for many of us here on the forum, it is difficult to understand that there are places right here in the United States where conditions like this exist. I don't want to derail the thread, because I am really happy that you came into such a well kept and beautiful artifact...both handsome and functional. But I feel sorry for the folks who live in places where their constitutional rights are flagrantly disregarded.
