Looking for info on gun
I'm new to the forum, looking for any information on this gun that was given to me a year ago. I tried calling Smith&Wesson with the serial number, but they were not able to tell me much, other that it must be old....?
.38 Special CTG
5 screw
Serial number- 254875
There has been factory work done, I'm almost sure, as there is a "diamond" stamped on the yoke. There seems to be a number that I can't make out. I'm hoping I'll have some pictures that will help any of you that are able to assist me with. Any other info? Let me know!

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! That is a 38 military and police revolver. It shipped sometime between 1915 and 1920. Someone with a database will come along soon and get you a better date.

The gun is a Model 1905, 4th change, probably shipped in late 1915, early 1916, according to shipping dates for close ser.#s. You are correct that work has been done, as the diamond stamp is the stamp of the service dept. and the yoke may have been replaced. Check the left side of the grip frame for a date code stamped there by the service dep't, indicating the
month & year the work was done. The code would be like 6.32 indicating June 1932. Ed.

FOZY, the Mlitary and Police, name changed to model 10 in 1957/58, was the mainstay of Smith and Wesson for years. These were excellent plain Jane working revolvers, at a price most could afford.
If yours is in proper condition it should be safe to shoot with target ammo. And a limited amount of STANDARD 38 special ammo should be safe to fire in it.

The 'standard' ammo statement should be clarified. Lead bullet standard velocity ammo is just fine, as long as it's in good mechanical shape. Jacketed bullet stuff might cause increased bore wear, but lead bullets at @700-750 f/s or so is what the gun was designed for and has probably been fed for over a century.

Looking for Manufacture Date .38 S&W Snub Nose
I have a S&W .38 caliber (.38 S&W, not Special) snub nose five-shot revolver with serial number 55977. I have been told that this is a Terrier? It was presented to my Mother it in 1950 by her uncle. Is there any way to determine date of manufacture?
Thanks,
Richard

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! I believe that Terrier shipped in 1949.

Just for future reference, it is best to not tag onto an established thread with an unrelated question, as it can quickly cause confusion. Starting a fresh thread eliminates that possibility. The closest Terrier serial number I have to 55977 on my list is 560xx shipping in 10/1950. Yours should have shipped close to that date. No way to find the manufacturing date, but it would necessarily be prior to the shipping date. Even S&W can't tell you that.

S&W started heat treating cylinders at ser. #316648 in Sept. 1919. I have #315083, shoot it often with Federal AE38B, 158 gr LRN. It shoots very well for me.

FozyBear,
From my list 25448x* shipped 4/1916 and 25519x* 8/1916, so yours should be in this general area. * Not my gun so I won't give the full SN.

Most SNs I have listed in the 25xxxx range shipped in 1916. And several in the 249xxx range also. However, I do show 2531xx as shipping in 12/17. Such is the way of S&W serial numbers vs shipping dates.

"FOZY, the Mlitary and Police, name changed to model 10 in 1957/58..."
No, S&W still used the names. It just added model numbers. It still uses names to this day.

Wow! This a lot of great information! I have checked for possible dates, but unable to make any out. There is a decent amount of pitting under the grips, but I don't think enough to eliminate any stamping. I'll check again.
I did put one round through it last week, and I loved it! I hope to keep it in better shape from now on.
