Default CHiefs Special 95K 1956?

Hi I was able to pick this up at a local shop as part of a retired officers trade in for a rifle.

He brought this in along with a 4506 and 4516 - this pistol he purchased as a BUG back in the 70's from a retired PANYNJ officer that was his BUG.

It is a little loose and I can fix that, but the grips are not to the pistol as they are a little bigger, just by a little and the serials are of course different.

I think I read that the pre-model 36, has smaller grips ' I ' Frame size and not ' J ' Frame size to after the model designations. Is this true or am I mistaken?

I am looking for the right grip for a 55/56 Chiefs - any leads?

Thanks !

Nick

Your gun has a standard J frame grip. The smaller "Baby Chief" frame you are thinking of was much earlier and long gone by your serial.

Thank you !

If that is the case would it just be a manufacturing tolerance then for the grip fit, they seem to overhang a bit....

Also would a diamond magna be correct for this range?

thanks for the quick response !

They were hand-fitted back then, so coming from another gun may be enough for the tolerances you describe.

Below a detail I snipped out of an older forum photo showing the stocks you need.

The four line address started in the late 40's, either 1948 or 1949.

Not a whole lot more need be said, but your CS is in the 1956 manufacturing SN range, and it would have used diamond J-frame grips. The "baby" CS production ceased around SN 46K in 1954.
