Default Help Identify .45

I know nothing about guns and need help identifying one. My late stepfather owned this S&W .45, serial # 69485. It has a wooden grip and a swivel loop on the butt. The barrel is 6 1/2 inches long and there is a fixed sight. Any information about its age and approximate worth would be greatly appreciated!

An expert will be along shortly. Might be a Model 1917 but those had 5 1/2" barrels I thought.

Welcome to the forum.

It's a Canadian property Second Model Hand Ejector, originally in 455 caliber. The C with the arrowhead is a Canadian marking . Many were converted to 45 ACP/AR, fewer to .45 Colt.

This thread needs to be in the 1896-1961 Section. Needs more pics, too.

Welcome to the Forum.

You have a 2nd Model .455 Hand Ejector that was built for the British Commonwealth during WW I. The barrel length is indeed 6 1/2", which was standard. The grips should be checkered and have gold medallions. The ones shown came from a 1917. It appears the hammer has been altered. It may have been re-blued.

As stated above, many have been rechambered to common US cartridges such as .45 Colt or .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim.

I'd put the value at around $400-$500, based on the photos. Better pictures would help. One of the cylinder, open, taken from the rear, will help determine the caliber.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! I have read that some of the Canadian guns were chambered for .45 Colt. But, probably, not one intended for battlefield service.

Definitely a Canadian second model, .455 or .45 Colt, possibly .455 converted to .45 Colt. A clear close-up picture of the rear face of the cylinder would help determine which, also better close-up pictures of all markings. The grips are not original.

Could be a 45 colt or a 45 acp. Either way the rear of the cylinder shows no serial number. If it was still a 455 the number would be there and thee gap between rear of cylinder and recoil shield tighter. For 45 colt the cylinder would need to be cut less than for 45 acp and 45 colt would also need chambers reamed deeper. I am thinking 45 colt as the gap between cylinder and recoil shield doesn't appear wide enough for acp with moon clips and the eighth of cylinder above cylinder does not appear to be as high as an acp gun.
