Default Currious about older unnumbered grips

I recently bought a nice set of unrelieved target grips for my K-32. I'm sorry if anyone recognizes them from the auction....they are really nice.
I hadn't had the original magna grips off of it since I first got the gun, about four or five years ago. All I could remember was that the grips didn't number to the gun, so I figured a good candidate for a set of targets. When I took the magnas off to install the targets I noticed that it's not that the grips don't match, they actually don't have any numbers at all. Someone had inked in K-32 on one grip, probably my dad's friend or his brother, I'm not sure who originally owned the gun. There is also faintly penciled in 32 K Frame on one and 32 K on the other. It seemed really strange that a set of grips from that time frame wouldn't have some s/n on them. They fit perfectly, but so do the targets.

I guess my real question is, could they have left the factory this way, or would they have been bought after the fact. It just seems someone went to a lot of trouble to keep these grips with this gun.

The stocks could well have been sold as replacements, in which case they would not have been numbered. The backs have also been sanded, probably to get the perimeter matching the frame better. Another indication of being replacements.

I was curious about the sanding marks on the washers, guess I didn't know how grips were fitted.

I would guess the sander wanted the surface to remain flat. Or become flat if it somehow had acquired some curvature. Fitting grips doesn't require a lot of skill, but it takes time and care. My guess is the originals got separated from the gun at some point. The then owner bought the replacements and spent the time and effort getting them right. It makes sense to then keep them with the gun
