Default Mod 36 no dash information?

Recently bought this no-dash model 36, and was wondering about the estimated year of manufacture as well what type of cylinder latch it has ( 2nd or 3rd?). Any other information would be appreciated. Thanks

Serial # - 171922

It has the 3rd and last style flat latch. Flat latches were not used after 1966.

1959 production that likely shipped last quarter of 1959.

THREE STYLES OF FLAT LATCHES:

1st style flat latch used only on the Baby J frame and K frame airweights:

2nd style flat latch began on the Improved I frames, K frame airweights, and Baby Js just prior to the Model of 1953 New J frames shown here:

3rd style shown on lower .38 Chief Spl. in first photo, with steeper incline at the front, and in 2nd photo; also used on Model of 1953 New I and New J frames, and K frame Airweights beginning mid late ‘50s; ending in 1966.

Thanks for the reference photos. I always wonder why they made several versions of these flat latches

The 1950s was the decade of the most evolution and cost cutting. They took less machining and were speedier to produce. The flat was awful to use. The 2nd was better and the 3rd was most ergonomic. Then they quit experimenting and went back to the regular style until the 1980s when they slimmed it for speed loaders.

Smith used the pre war style "double pinch" on the Classic Series but they were cast.

We see a similar more recent cost cutting period when S&W went to MIM (Metal Injection Molding) parts.

That's a nice one, and a good price. I've bought from Britt before. He buys up a lot of retired police guns, and by the looks of the gun and where you got it, there is a high probabliity it is a detective's gun retired from NYPD or a neighboring agency like Suffolk Co. or Nassau Co.

I have an ex-NYPD Mod. 36 with serial 148xxx, shipped in April 1959 to Greenblatt (located behind NYPD HQ at the time), where a lot of officers bought guns.

Thanks for all the replies, and nice gun absalom. I didn't realize these flat latches really were used to save cost but I really like the way they look
