Default Old kit gun...Is it just me...

...or is this price a little...crazy? Not trying to put down the seller, just want to know if these really bring that kind of money. Condition and everything else considered, it kind of seems like a pipe dream, but I could be wrong.

Removed link per forum guidelines, but the bidding opens at $10,000 and the buy it now is $15,000. No bids as of now. From the add:

Quote:

The pistol's finish is at 95% condition w/ holster ware.

The bore is excellent.

The grips are in excellent condition w/ some dents on the bottom of grips & a small dent on left grip and small chip on right grip.

With the serial #: 534571 it falls in the rare range of the .22/.32 Kit Gun and brings the value of this to the $12,000 - $15,000 range.

Sorry no box or paper work.

A rare Smith & Wesson for the collector.
To me, condition is more like 85 - 90

It's just you---your Momma and Daddy actually, they instilled in you some good sense, some common sense, and last but not least; a sense of value.

The seller's folks, on the other hand, taught him about really good smokin' stuff----as in "pipe dreams" (some of which are really good------or so I'm told).

And yes, this price is a little crazy; but you never know until you ask. Sometimes you have to ask more than once. It's likely that will be the case here.

In the meantime, I've got this bridge---------------------------------------

You raise an excellent question!

As my friend Ralph posted above, whatever seller is smoking or using, has confused his reading of the Bluebook of Gun values, as well as the BB being confused about prices and premiums for pre war Kit Guns. In general it's a reasonable resource but not on this model.

You're correct, the price is in the idiotic range!

These 22/32s are a bit scarce but by no means rare. I can't be more specific w/o seeing it but we frequently see guns as described sell between $2-3000 tops.

I believe it will be for sale for a long time and never sell at such an off base price.

I hope this helps,

As of late I've noticed quite a few items (NOT just forearms) that have RIDICULOUS pricing on them! I was searching for a Starrett measuring tool that normally sells on ebay for between $35 and $60 depending on condition / original boxing and I ran across one priced at $6,000.00

I guess there might be a fool somewhere who is willing to pay it.

You ALSO need to be careful when bidding on stuff. It is very common to find an item in great condition with a very reasonable price - but check the shipping & handling!!! I've seen S&H costs far far far exceed the price of the goods by many times - don't get bamboozled!!!!

That particular gun has been making the rounds of different auction houses at that price for most of the last decade. Nobody has bought it. Nobody bids. It has been discussed on this forum before, the last time just a few weeks ago.

The Blue Book is simply wrong about the value of prewar Kit Guns, and the seller presumably hopes to capitalize on the publisher's error and an uncritical buyer's gullibility. I would value the KG in question about about $2500, give or take 10 percent, so this one is offered at about four to five times its real-world market value.

I don't know about you guys, but I am sure a heck not handing over $10,000 PLUS to anyone who has misspelling in their listings.

Well like they say there is a sucker with money that just might buy anything because he was told how great or rare it is.
Personally for that money I would buy me a Corvette before that gun.

One of the tools I use at online sales sites is the pricing of items from the same seller for merchandise I'm familiar with. I wonder how many potential buyers of the Winchesters or Colts he was selling were chased away because they saw how crazy he was on this particular gun. Kind of self defeating, if you ask me.

If he's been trying to sell it for that long, you think he'd take the hint, maybe he just figures the knowledgeable collectors haven't seen it yet. The seller has over 900 positive feedback just on that site, he must be selling something! The rest of his listings are a bit high but not that insane.

I'm with you on that one. A few years ago I read an article about how to find great bargains on fleabay, and searching for mis-spelled items was one of the tips. Sounds good, but one buyer mentioned how she got great deals on diamonds that way, and I thought: "So, not only are you buying diamonds on fleabay, but you're buying them from people who can't spell 'diamond'?" Oooo - kay.
