38/44 HD **Help
I have a chance to pick up a couple 38/44s that are old PD guns.
They have blue wear and back straps are lightly rusted. The bore
cylinder and frames are good. Neither gun has functioning lock
work. These were victims of cannibalization back in the 60s. I
need to make an offer to CYA on cost of internal parts. I was
thinking of $200-$250@. Does this sound intelligent? I forgot to
add that right hand grip panels are beat on both guns and lock
up on cylinders are tight and ejectors function. One has broken
firing pin, but both have hammers.

If you can buy for $200-$250 each, I would not hesitate an instant. Nor would anyone else here. Great project guns.

I bet there are dozens of members here who would love to stumble on a chance like this. I know I would!
Good luck if you buy them and let us know how your restoration project goes, and the end result. Pictures, even before images, are always appreciated. (smile)

Are you asking about purchase price of guns or internal replacement parts?
Just curious, what barrel length?

Drm50,
I read your post as as $200-250 for internal replacement parts. if so that's close enough.
If for each gun, I'd grab them.

If both guns are restored, they would be worth in the vicinity of $600 as shooters. So, if you pay $250 each, you would have about $350 of room for parts. If you plan to have them refinished, you won't get your money back IMO, unless you do it yourself. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

You didn't mention if these are pre- or (more likely) post-war HDs; parts for the latter will be more available, but either way it sounds to be a great deal and project if you have the funds handy. Please let us know how the negotiation turns out .

If your thinking $250 per gun as is I would buy in a heart beat. $250 per to cover parts should easily do it as long as cylinders are good. I have bought 2 never used 38/44 barrels in the white for low dollars lately just to get the sight ramps.
