Presentation stocks on Pre-10 M&P?
I have a M&P that dates between 1954-1956 that I would like to put target stocks on. For that period what would be most "correct"? I've seen checkered diamond targets mentioned, with or without the football cutout pre-1958. How about smooth/presentation stocks?
Thanks,
Tim

It really doesn't make a bit of difference, since an M&P would not have come with any sort of target stocks. For period correctness, checkered targets with the diamond and with or without the football relief would be the choice. But since you are adding target stocks to a non-target gun, just put on it what you like. If you like the look and feel of smooth presentation stocks, go for it!

Smooth targets stocks were available in that time frame. Don't recall any that lettered with them, but they could be had as accessory items, and may have shipped on some factory engraved guns.
I have a pair of unrelieved rosewood targets for a K frame. On K frames, the relief cut began showing up about the time the Combat Magnum (pre-19) arrived.

If you want "period correct" target stocks, you need stocks with no relieved area on the left stock panel (plain or checkered, your choice).

I have a 1952 4" blue M&P that is wearing smooth target grips. It was my daddy's revolver and I gave him the grips for Christmas one year. It also has a red ramp front sight that I installed. The barrel is bright blue and the frame is satin. S&W replaced the barrel in the early '70s after the forcing cone split. Dad had just bought the M&P and we were shooting it with some Super Vel that he had bought along with it.

Might want to check Keith Brown's and John Culina's websites for ideas; the cost of a original set of K frame unrelieved targets would get you in that price range, and you'd have your pick of wood, checkering, etc.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Tim! I second S42N8's suggestion.

That looks like a near mint example & not refinished, to me. I wouldn't be shooting that one anyway. That's just me, most would disagree.
