Default Gun show 38/44 Super King

Well I guess anyone can get lucky at a gun show once in a while.

I was walking the show and saw a vendor waiving this gun around and showing a bunch of people and well, it got my attention right away.
The red insert was missing and didn't have the cockeyed hammer, but it looked like it was very well taken care of so I picked her up.

I like the grips but really think that King guns look much better with roper grips so I splurged on what ended up being a very expensive pair of non thumbrest ropers.

About ten minutes after buying this gun I had four SWCA members around me congratulating me on my new find. Felt like I was passing around my firstborn. LOL

Congratulations at one.
Haven't we seen those grips on here before?

My other set is up top on the HBH Outdoorsman.
This is only my second N frame gun but I think I sense a pattern

I tried switching grips and putting my old ones on the King gun.

The new grips do not fit the HBH gun easily. There are variances in each pair of ropers grips.

I love the Ropers on any gun but my question was about the ivory grips. Seems like there was thread about what the symbol is on the left panel.

Wow, you guys up North must have all the good gun shows. We get nothing like that here. We can drive to Atlanta for an endless stream of gun shows, but who wants to drive in Atlanta. Plus it's the same old overpriced stuff every week.

Still no luck with that. Spent hours going through Mayan and Aztec symbols but no real matches.

Beautiful gun indeed! I'm not a collector, so very uninformed about some of these .38/44. handguns. I was wondering about whether the "Super King" is a variant of the Heavy Duty or Outdoorsman. Thanks for any info. and thanks for sharing, what even a novice could appreciate as a classic beauty.

King was a gunsmith who modified a number of handguns. He is noted for target hammers, barrel ribs and action jobs.

Wink

Great set if Ropers even grain wise on a spectacular gun.
That HBH would look pretty fine on the King gun....just saying : )

Well that is a common guess along with a cactus flower but the Mexican eagle on the reverse side makes it seem unlikely.

I was lucky enough to be one of those four and I must say that it's probably the nicest 38-44 OD's I've seen and held.
In fact, it was so nice that I'd gladly offer my first born in trade for it

Thats just plain beautiful in so many ways...purpose built revolvers attract me. I am still kicking myself for letting a Colt Officers Match w/Super King treatment slip out of my hands over 40 years ago. I have a HD that has a King front and rear sight that is a birthyear piece that is a joy to shoot, but it can't hold a candle to that beautiful thing you just scored, congratulations...

Those are two of the prettiest O/Ds that I have seen. You have great taste!

I happen to be of the opinion that the 38/44 O/D is one of the most aesthetically pleasing revolvers to ever roll off the assembly line and the Super Target guns are particularly sweet. I think the two favorites that reside in my safe are my King Super Target and one with a HBH...

I also kind of like one that I got all scratched up that sports a little KB lumber...

You got that right. Nothing says "Mid-20th Century America" like an N Frame with a tapered barrel. They really are something. Congrats to the OP on his find, and I love the pic of that heavily engraved piece.
