Please help me identify my S&W
I have a S&W hand ejector with no model number. The serial number is 449xxx, the barrel says "38 S&W SPECIAL CTG", it has a 5" barrel, fixed sights, a strain screw, and a 5 screw design.
I was told that this was the duty gun of a Mobile Alabama police officer, and that the holster was original.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could tell me the model, any history on the weapon, and approximate value.

It is a K-frame Military and Police Model (M&P) which probably left the factory around mid-1923. It appears original and correct. A similar one would probably sell at a gun show in the $300-$400 price range. I can't say anything about the holster, but it does not look like the typical police holster used in most places at that time.

Hi Ben and welcome to the Forum.
It is a .38 Military & Police square butt revolver. It was made sometime after mid-year 1922 (when the Made in U.S.A. first appeared) and before the end of 1924 (probably). No doubt someone will come along and guess at the ship date. 
The stocks are correct for the period and may be original. The nickel plate also appears to be original, but showing honest wear.
It should be a decent shooter.

This comparison neatly illustrates the problem with guessing ship dates based on nearby serial numbers. You might be roughly in the ballpark, but without a factory letter, it is just guessing. The ballpark could be mighty large . . .

And s/n 450345, almost 5000 numbers younger, shipped in 5/23, a year earlier  .
The approximations deducted from known letter dates are useful for "likely produced before ..", but shipping dates are a different story and late shippers quite common.
