My pre-28 had diamond targets (non-relieved) numbered to the revolver. 1954-55 vintage

I believe Diamond Magnas would have been the standard issue stocks.

I agree with Dave T. Mine has diamond Magnas.
Since the 28 was basically the economy version of the 27 (as they were called post 1957/8ish), and developed to give the working men like Highway Patrolmen, a .357 magnum, I wouldn't think they would have been issued with target stocks unless a special order.
Of course, the one common rule with S&W's is that nothing is always or never.

The only option available on HP's was target stocks, IIRC.

I have one that has rubber on it. I need to replace them. I have found a pair of smooth targets, I want it to be as correct as possible. all the nice diamond grips are just so pricey. I am trying to be like my daddy was, thrifty as he called it, I called it being cheep, but now he is gone and I am the old man of my family I know exactly how he felt. the older I get the smarter may daddy was..........

The other option was barrel length, 4" or 6".
Some HPs / M28s also came with a smooth trigger (as opposed to serrated) but I think that wasn't an option, it just depended on what parts were handy that day. I wouldn't be surprised if customers could special order a target trigger and target hammer back in those days.

When the HP first appeared, the standard factory grips were Magnas. Target stocks were shown to be available as an option for $4.50 more. No mention was made of optional smooth trigger availability.

Roy Jinks has stated that barrel length (4 or 6) and stocks (Magna or Target) were the only options available. If somebody wanted things like target triggers and hammers, they were steered towards the .357 Magnum/Model 27. But as with all things, if you knew somebody, things could be arranged.
