Hi, I'm new here and need some help, please. I picked up a
38 S&W SPECIAL U.S. CTG'S pistol at our gun show today. I bought it with no real knowledge about it. Serial number is 74119. It has 5 screws and a square butt. Fixed sights and a 5 inch barrel. I liked the look of it and the balance in my hand. I would really appreciate any help in dating it and any other info you could share. Thanks, Joe

It's an early Model of 1905. SN 74119 suggests it shipped around mid-1906. The two-caliber barrel stamp indicates it will fire both .38 Special and .38 Long Colt cartridges. At that time, the .38 Long Colt (shorter than the .38 Special) was the official U. S. military revolver cartridge. You are fortunate it appears to have its original grips, even though heavily worn. Leave them alone. No +P ammunition please, not good for these old ladies.

It may just be a typo on your part, but that is a square butt.

BTW, the 2-caliber barrel stamping was used up to the low 100000s SN range, so it is definitely correct. It probably started in the low 30000s SN range with the round butt Model 1902. The principal difference between the Model 1902 and the Model 1905 is that the former had a round butt, the latter a square butt.

What would a ballpark value estimate be for this pistol in this condition?

Unfortunatly, in that condition, not a lot. Maybe $300 - $350+/- most places.
