UPDATED Another old scratched up N Frame ...
1951, P. Jaeger & Co, Jenkintown, PA , Klaus Willig engraver.
Professional photographs added 7/10/17, 2:50PM, with thanks to photographer, Mark Calzaretta.
Updated 6/21/17, 7:40 AM
Just received a response from Claus Willig as follows:
Dear Mr. Raimondi,
it is always a great pleasure to see again some of my engravings , done long ago.
Yes I engraved this revolver in 1969 for Paul Jaeger Inc. Jenkintown PA. ( it was a 55 hours job )
Concerning the stock: I never did any work on stocks! / END
Mr. Willig also included serial numbers of other S&W's he's engraved over the years. What a "prince" of a gentleman.
------> Special thanks to Richard "RKMesa" for connecting me to Claus Willig.

Contemplating some very fine "scratching" there. Also conjuring the dough needing to be "scratched up" to accommodate such an acquisition!!! Hopefully not a "rash" decision requiring seven year itch amortization!
A beautiful piece of art!
My take!

Of all my engraved guns, the 357 engraved by Claus is one of my very favorites...

I understand that many of the stocks on Willig engraved guns were made by Adolf Geiss. Do you know what the "WDC" stands for and if Willig also made the grips?

Richard,
This is the .38-44 OD I bid on back around September / August 2016 that I asked advice from you and Bill.
I will take better photos of it with natural daylight and macro. the pix I posed were just quick snap shots at Charlotte.
this is the first so marked set of grip I've ever seen. I feel the grips are surely made "for" this, specific gun on several points.
Do you have research on Willig from past experiences you can share with me? .e.g his full name and a biography. I had inquired on the Engravers guild but cannot determine if he is still alive or not. It seems that up to about 10 years ago, he was alive.
Do any of your Willig's or others of this hand have signed, grips ?
Sal

No, I got this and a Bottle of Louis XIII at a local auction several months back. Richard "RKMesa" and Bill Cross were my two main "go-to guys" for advice and comparisons on this one. Thank you, Richard. Thank you, Bill.

I can tell I'm getting old... the memory is not what it used to be. It is a great gun.

Claus is the son of Emil Willig (also a master engraver). There is a great article here - tons of information and photos:
Willig, Emil & Claus – German Hunting Guns
As of a year or so ago, Claus is still alive. He was kind enough to email me back. This is the email address I have for him: [email protected]

6 rounds through this thing would knock off about $5K in value. I'm a free thinker but THAT crazy, I'm not.

See Updated Post #1 for response from "the" man, Claus Willig, himself who affirms this is his work, however the stocks were NOT done by Willig.
What great affirmation and additional provenance !
While I firmly believe these stocks were made specifically for this revolver, I have to now research W D C which is in progress.
Special thanks to RKMesa / Richard Garner on the advice and help in research.

I suppose that at the hands of a Master Engraver, 55 hours would do it but I'd have thought about 100 hours of work.
Under 40x magnification, there is not one flaw, not one stopped and started line.
Although my craftsmanship is limited to vintage and antique auto restoration, I am so amazed at his work.
Absolutely the finest I've ever seen. IMHO either as fine or finer than a Kornbrath engraved S&W I've examined of Gary Garbrecht's collection. Although, I say a tie or equal in the long guns and special commissions I'd put Kornbrath and Willig at a dead heat in a comparison for their best works.
This was one of Gary's Kornbrath's: *EXTRAORDINARILY RARE KORNBRATH ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON .44 HAND EJECTOR 3RD MODEL DA REVOLVER.

The new pictures are fantastic!! The only thing I would do is take the key, to the wooden case, and put it in a different compartment from the gun!

He's the best. He once gifted me a few of his special prints from his Playboy magazine days. Printed on polished aluminum media instead of photo paper.
Still not decided which photos get me more excited, the Playboy photos or the S&W photos.

I have to admit that envy is crouching at my door.
With all the bad financial setbacks I've had in my life, I have never had the funds for such beauties.
All I can do is "stop" looking at them so I don't get sad.
Congratulations - true craftsmanship, wondrous creativity and pure beauty.

With all the bad financial setbacks I've had in my life, I have never had the funds for such beauties.
All I can do is "stop" looking at them so I don't get sad.
Congratulations - true craftsmanship, wondrous creativity and pure beauty.

Don't be envious. Years back I had more loose cash then I knew what to do with. To stay OUT of trouble, I invested in my old S&W hobby. Now, I have to pick and choose carefully.
I was, by no means, a "broke-ster" however, when Gary Garbrecht (RIP) was alive, he'd out spend me 10 to 1. He was genuinely a regular, down-to-earth, guy. He never made me feel as though I was a welfare child and I admired his collection as much as it were my own. When he ran out of Registered Magnums to buy, I showed him some Model 3s. Gary, singlehandedly, created the first world's shortage of Model 3s and drove the prices through the roof. God, I wish he were still here.
That's what this forum does for us, it allows us all to share in each other achievements and accomplishments ... and ... newly found old treasures.

Another Willig Engraved Example.....
I would like to add one to this thread.......this one was done by the Willigs (Claus and his father Emil) in the late 1950’s as confirmed by the recent email response I received from Claus Willig:
“Hi Mr Lester. Your S&W is engraved for sure in our shop, before the 1960s. At that time (1955) I started recording all my engravings. In your case my father did the scenes and I did the goldlines and the English. It is always a great pleasure to see early jobs so many years later again.
Sincerely Claus Willig”
Claus Willig was approximately 20 years old when he engraved this piece. Thanks to RKmesa for the email contact information for Mr. Willig. I plan on doing a separate thread for this piece once I have all of the background information I want plus some better photos. Click on the photos for a closer look.
