I am brand new to the forum and need help identifying a revolver I just bought to refinish. it does not have a model number where the model number is on the inside of the yoke, instead it has 4 numbers stamped in its place, and also if anyone knows where I can get a replacement hammer for it I need one since the checkering has been wore off, thanks in advance.

As you did not provide the serial number on the butt, about all that can be said is that is a pre-1923 M&P model. Definitely not original grips and very probably re-plated. The number inside the yoke is an assembly number, not a serial number.

I believe you have a Model of 1902 that is wearing fake stag grips that convert a round butt grip to a square butt. Please remove the grips and share a side picture of the grip frame. Also, share the serial number from the butt. If you like, you can X out the last two digits. Example: 123xx.

As noted, if you remove the grips, you'll find the 5th screw. Also, you'll find the serial number on the butt of the gun. It ought to be on the flat under the barrel, and on the rear face of the cylinder.

Thanks guys, the gun was plated in the late 80's from what the previous owner said. The serial number is 2992xx and I have included a picture with the grips removed. I am trying to figure out if this gun was originally nickel plated or if it was in another finish so I can get it refinished to be as original as possible, that's "if" its worth my time and money to get it refinished?

To determine original finish:

B, or 'N' stamped, or not stamped: ahead of pre war serial #s on the barrel flat (or in shroud),
rear face of yoke,
on rear face of cyl separated from serial #,
behind the extractor star,
and by itself on right side grip frame on commercial guns (only on left side grip frame on post WWII models), indicates an original Blue finish or an original Nickel finish based upon the corresponding letter.

The absence (more prevalent after 1930) of either the 'B' or 'N' can also indicate that it left the factory nickeled.

2992xx would date its shipment as being in 1919. The closest on my list is SN 2996xx shipping in 6/19. Yours was made shortly before heat treatment of the cylinder began in September 1919. S&W would have called it a round butt Military and Police (M&P) Model. Personally I wouldn't spend a penny to get it refinished as it has only moderate value. Refinishing won't improve its value, only its cosmetics.
