I have a 5 screw .38 S&W Special ctg. It has the little bitty stocks, numbered to the gun, 470551. The stocks stop way below the frame knuckle. I can't find a comfortable way to hold it. It is a factory reblue, and functions fine: it has adjustable sights. How do you experts grip these old timers? It might be a M&P Model of 1905 4th change.
Anyway, it likes light load target wadcutters, and might be pretty accurate if I could figure out how to grip it.

Without seeing a picture I can't tell exactly what you mean but most people either get aftermarket stocks or a grip adapter.

Since there is only one screw to remove, add the grips (with or without a grip adapter) that fit you the best. It doesn't take much to swap back on the original service grips.

Triplelocks are N-framed revolvers and much beefier than the little M&Ps your talking about. I have a similar problem in that my fingers are far too long for me to comfortably shoot most of the little revolvers comfortably without the addition of target stocks. I have found that with my little 32-20 Hand Ejector I can use two hands and comfortably shoot it with standard stocks. I-framed revolvers require a different approach, but you would probably find a way to utilize two hands to get a comfortable grip on the thing. If you indeed have an M&P 4th change, its a K-framed revolver and there are target stocks available that will change everything for you, if its a round butt frame you can get square butt frame stocks custom made to fit. That is what I do with my late model N framed S&W revolvers that are round butted, I just order up a set of square butt stocks that are made to fit the round butt frame. Nothing fits my hands better than an N-framed target stock, check with John Culinga he does beautiful work.

Lt, bring it with you next week, I think I have an extra pair of stocks that may work.

LT, I have the same model, yours is a year or two older than mine. I got it with the small service stocks and a grip adapter. That was still too small for me to shoot comfortably. I put a well used pair of target stocks on it to shoot and the original ones for show. It too loves 148 grain wadcutters.

I asked the same question a few months ago, after shooting a Triplelock and a 1920's 2nd model with period correct stocks and somewhat warm loads. "Ouch!" Now I show them with correct stocks, and shoot them with magnas or a modern style of stock/grip.

I have some older guns that I like to shoot with the standard stocks. I put a glove on my shooting hand to keep it from eating up my middle finger knuckle.

The short answer, as high up on the grip frame as possible and firmly. Low and loose allows the gun to squirm with firing and there isn't much surface to hold onto in the first place.

The long answer, depending on your hand size, strength, and joint flexibility you may need a grip adapter or different stocks.
