Default Age and value of new trade

I recently traded a few jeep parts for what I think is a little jewel. Shoots wonderfully. Hand Ejector, Serial Number S 8663XX, 38 Special, 5 screw with a strain screw, 4" barrel with fixed sights. serial numbers on Barrel, Frame, and Cylinder match. The grip has 382821 stamped in it.

Would like to know all you can tell me about it, including the value if any one cares to guess.

The gun has been refinished which hurts the value. I would say you could probably get $200 maybe $250 if someone REALLY had to have it.

The right side seam around the side plate is the most obvious. That seam should be almost invisible. This one shows well, because they buffed it with the side plate off, rounding the edges. The ejector rod tip is finished and should be in the white, and the hammer and trigger should be case colored, not blued. I also see dishing of the side plate screw holes. Appears to be a little pitting under the bluing in some places. Cylinder has a different color too. It was either not refinished, a replacement, or took the bluing different. Does the number on the face of the cylinder match the number on the frame?

Looks to me like a 1948ish .38 Military & Police with the large ejector rod knurl. Definitely a refinish. Not a good one since the cylinder seems to not match the frame in color. Also the trigger and hammer are blued and they shouldn't be. Under $300 IMO.

Thanks for the detail.

From other post I believe this to be from 46 or 47. ? Grips from an earlier model. Are the grips correct for the year?

Welcome aboard from Wyoming.

Here's my Dec. '46, according to Roy, 5", SN S8691XX. The company didn't ship in sn order, but I'd guess -- all things being equal -- yours shipped earlier than mine. Mine's refinished, too, but it's a keeper in my book. The stocks on mine match the gun's sn so, yes, I'd say yours appear to be correct for the period.

I paid more than the guys are saying yours is worth. Okay. My daughter will have to worry about that someday.

Cheers,

Bob

EDIT TO FIX: I made a typo in my sn. Mine is S8601XX. Apologies for confusing the issue.

While it's definitely not a collectors piece in its current condition, since you said it shoots wonderfully that still makes it a nice piece in my book. Heck, I even sort of like the way it looks. Well, except maybe the seams around the side plate.

I say enjoy it for the nice shooter that it is.

You have a postwar .38 Military & Police revolver. It most likely left the factory in about December, 1946, or January, 1947.

As others have noted, it has been refinished.

The stocks are later, not earlier. The tapered shoulder makes them no earlier than about 1953. The serial number is from a different series, probably a K prefix gun, since by that number (c. 1957) a C prefix gun would have shipped with PC Magna stocks.

I agree the price on this one would be down around $300, perhaps less.

I'm in the midst of a major research project on the S prefix guns. I would appreciate knowing the complete serial number so I can add it to my database. PM it to me, please. Ownership info will not be tracked or used in any way. I need the number for statistical analysis only.

Thanks.

The stocks appear to be newer ones - probably from the mid-1950's. Your stocks would have been the "sharp shoulder" magna stocks. Look at the pictures from two-bit cowboy and you will notice a sharp "crease" at the top edge. Yours are more gently rounded, indicating a later stock, and the number puts them in the mid-1950's range.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! Even so, it will make a nice shooter. Still has the old long throw action.

S 8663XX suggests a late 1946-early 1947 shipment for your M&P, as others have surmised. No question in my mind it has been refinished and grips are too new. Worth what someone interested in a utility shooter would pay for it.

That is the best description I have seen, "utility shooter". To me, not worth buying. Best

Thanks for all the help.

Its a keeper for me. I'm proud to be a S&W owner. Looks like I got a good deal, the jeep parts cost me $260 new. Used value about $150.00. It's too fine a revolver to let go. Refinished or otherwise, its still a great piece of history and it has held up very well for over 70 years old. Most importantly, fun to shoot.

They are fun to shoot. The long action tends to be very smooth. I own "several" of them and enjoy shooting all of them.
