What was the last serial number before model numbers began?
I am especially interested in the K frame pre model 10. But, info on other models would be appreciated also.
Best,
Charles

I owned a 5" K-frame .38 special (with a rack number) that, by it's serial number, was firmly into the Model 10 production. However, this gun had no trace of ANY Model 10 stampings. I guess the worker at that station was in the bathroom when that gun was supposed to get stamped.

There's no answer to that question. The reason is that some guns with lower S/N's were competed and model marked after some with higher serial numbers. Again, guns weren't completed in order of their serial numbers.

I don't believe we know a specific serial number at which the pre-Model became the Model 10. General agreement seems to be that it happened in the mid-430-thousands in mid-1958. The SCSW production dates given don't mesh with lettered shipping dates for those specific years, by the way. Known higher serial numbers existed earlier than would be possible using SCSW date frames; C429740 is given as highest for 1959, but we have lettered guns up to the C477-thousands for 1959.

For the 44 Magnum, stamping of MOD-29 in the yoke cut started at approximately serial number S184000 in late 1958.

My K38 Combat Masterpiece is s/n 3044xx and it shipped in Dec 1957. It is a pre model number with the original stocks.

For the K-series revolvers, based on my list, I'll say the changeover to model numbers happened in the K32xxxx-K33xxxx neighborhood.
