Default 32-20 price check.

At a local pawn shop. Round butt with the early, hard to see sights. .Serial number 30,000 odd. 6 1/2" barrel, factory refinished later. Had the 'marca registrada" on the right side of the frame. Bore appears to be good but dirty. Overall, pretty nice refinished. What's a fair price range?

$200-$300 tops if refinished. It's from ca. 1907. With the Marca Registrada stamp it was probably re-stamped at the factory after it was sent in for service. That was done.

Ok. Not a barnburner of a deal. When did they go to the square rear sight notch? That's much easier to see, at least for me.

It was some time in the later 1920s, don't know the exact year.

I can get it for 225. Very tight gun, more so than the Gun That Will Shoot Right Through A Man. Worth going for?

Very good price. I always place a refinish premium if the gun has a factory refinish. That combined with the unusual 6 1/2" barrel will bring $300 to $400 at any gun auction today and demand seems to be stronger with the long barreled versions. An advantage of a factory refinish is that those guns are also repaired and brought up to "new gun" mechanical condition, plus usually kept in very good condition by the owner.

Just noticed your question about 1st or 2nd Change? As Supica's book states, there were two dowel guide pins added to the star extractor. It there are none, it is a 1st Change, if there are two pins, it is a 2nd Change. Roy mentions this change, and details a few internal changes made to produce the 2nd Model. One was that there was a patent stamp added to the rebound slide, but my revolver has the stamp.

It is popular opinion that the 2nd Change occurred around 33,500, but I have one with serial number 34705, shipped in 1908 and has most of the attributes of the 1st Model, no rib added to hammer, and no key slot in the rebound slide., plus no star pins as noted above. My guess is that these changes may not have happened all at once, so there was some transition period.

I know it's marked "32 Winchester Ctg" and am almost betting sure the s/n's 30xxx. Is the 6" or 6 1/2" harder to find?

Don't know for sure, but I'd think the 6-1/2 might be less common. Both lengths were available on M&P's (.38 and .32-20) until a few years into Model of 1905 production.

Looking at 100 M&Ps in the SWCA database shipped from 1902 to 1915 shows that the distribution of barrel lengths in both 32-20 and 38 were close to the same, with the 6.5" barrels making up a slight majority.

4" . . 25%
5" . . 20%
6" . . 24%
6.5" . 31%

As for ship dates, I have the following note in my files: 1899 until 1913 - 32 Winchester CTG. stamping date range.

If you are interested in a .32-20 shooter, $225 is a good price.
