Cool This One Photo Screams "Smith & Wesson"

I was looking through some old photos and found this one close-up image of a part of a revolver personifies the mystique, the history, the excitement, and the promise of what I view is Smith & Wesson. Can you guess the vintage, finish and model?

I would love to see your "One Photo" of a PART of a gun that Personifies your image of "Smith & Wesson".

Thanks for letting me share,

Vintage: Early '50s (shape of the rib on barrel shroud, domed sight base pins instead of polished flush).

Finish: Nickel

Model: .357 Magnum (Pre Model 27).

"One Photo" of a PART of a gun that Personifies your image of "Smith & Wesson":

Photos thx to Sebago Son

Looks like a nickel pre-27 with a 3.5 inch barrel. And Hondo is showing us a nice triple lock. I'll have to go through my photos to see if I have one of a "single part".

Love this sort of thread.....keeps you looking at SCSW, and learning something every day!

Thanks Richard for starting.

My contribution is 5 "mystery" one part shots....5 different Smiths, widely varying vintage.

Take a shot or two (pun intended) at identity...I'll jump back on this evening (gotta go get the fireworks, BBQ makins, some cold ones, etc.) and see how the experts are doing.

PS: I did guess the finish correctly on the OP

I don't have close-up photos of these (maybe I should take some - smile) but there are two features that speak to me.

The first would be a close-up of the upper side-plate screw. The "5-screw" Smiths are my favorites, particularly the N-framess.

Second would be the frame immediately above the cylinder release...free of that ugly, stupid lock and it's little arrow.

And yes I know that borders on boorish behavior but it is a statement about the S&Ws I admire, and where the company lost their way.

This, to me, exemplifies the attention to detail of Smith & Wessons manufacturing practices: the serial numbering of the rear sight leaf and the rear sight blade to the frame of a Model of 1899.

A friend brought over some of his guns he'd engraved for me to photograph.

I thought this one was pretty cool.

I've got myself sitting here saying "duh"... Somewhere in my mind I saw a pin holding the barrel on - but looking back, nope, it's not there... Thanks for straitening me out. And thanks for posting.

I'd say pretty well, except for the "K22 Masterpiece". I think that's a .22-32. The hammer screams "J Frame!"

Default answers to post 5 - kudos to Richard

Couldn't jump on last night but Richard nailed most of them, 2 right, 2 wrong, 1 dang close.... so here goes

Mystery 1: actually a Model 25-2, 45 ACP, 6.5" bbl shipped Feb 14,1972

Mystery 2: actually a K22 Ist Model (Outdoorsman) Letters to Nov. 29, 1931

Mystery 3: Richard dead on: Model 10-5, 4 inch, circa 1972

Mystery 4: Hondo44 and Lebomm nailed this one, a Model 34-1, 4", with round to square butt conversion stocks which I think (still having trouble confirming) were factory as original owner told me it came with them.

Mystery 5: Richard nailed this one too. It's my M60 no dash engraved by Ben Shostle, Stag grips, shipped June 9, 1981

Congrats to all who ventured opinions and guesses. I have enjoyed this whole thread and seen things (and parts) I didn't know existed in some models...just wets my appetite for more Smiths of different flavors.

Without this name it would be far more subdued.

RKmesa, You came very close on my pictures. The Model 27-2 is 8 3/8" barrel. It was my fault since I could not get the entire barrel in the picture with a good close-up of the top strap. Production year 1979.

The Model 28-2 has a 4" barrel.

Thanks, and enjoyable and educational thread.

Model: the ".357 Magnum" (a.k.a. Registered Magnum)
Vintage: 1935 (shipping date 8/27/1935)
Caliber: .357 Magnum
Finish: Blue
Features: Small roll mark on the left side. It shipped with a 6.5" barrel, but went back to the factory for a barrel swap to 3.5" and sports a King base with a ramp front blade. In the photo, it sports ivory stocks, but it shipped with standard stocks and a separate grip adapter... It is a beauty!!!

How'd I do?

I should know this one as it is a .357 Magnum Pinto and I really try and pay attention to these... So hear goes:

Model: Pre-27
Caliber: 357 Magnum
Vintage: Mid to late 1950's
Features: Two Tone (Pinto) finish, special order, front sight has been replaced from a red ramp to a patridge with a red post, also has a white outline rear sight, currently sports smooth target stocks and has a target hammer, regular trigger, shipped to Rex Firearms in NY.

Well... am I close?

Tom:

I don't know the 44 Specials very well, but here is my take:

Top one is a 6" barreled, fixed sight 44Spl from the early 1920's (Mushroom Extractor Rod Knob) - it shipped to Wolf & Klar, based on the "through the blue" engraving.

Bottom is a 5" barreled, fixed sight 44Spl from the mid to late 1930s (1930's knob)

That's all I got...

Well going back to the factory explains the hammer cut for post war sliding bar safety hammer block on a Reg Mag.

I wonder if the PW safety block was automatically done by the factory upon a return for barrel change or if the owner requested it?

In a word no.....lol
Model caliber vintage wrong
It is a Pinto and the front sight is straight from the factory.
Shipped to NY but not Rex
