Default Pre-Model 25 received today

I purchased the below Model of 1955 in an auction a couple of weeks ago, and received it today.

Serial number S 165517, which I guess makes it a first year?

Here's the good, the bad, and the good.

GOOD: It is mechanically perfect with a tight action and mirror-like bore and chambers. Beautiful case hardening on the hammer and trigger. Light turn line.

BAD: It has some freckles on the left side and one bad area of light pitting - just the size of a finger-print on the right barrel. Came with rubber Pachs on it.

GOOD (I think): I got it for $425 plus $80 commission at an auction.

I realize to get correct stocks on it (Cokes? or Non-Relieved targets?) will be VERY expensive if I try to get them.

I solicit your opinions and comments. Thanks.

Fantastic Buy. Right place at the right time, I guess. Did you buy it to shoot?

If you bought it to shoot, what's wrong with using the the Pachs? I do not say that in jest.
The closest SN to your S165517 I have on my list is S1650xx which shipped on 6/28/56. I don't see any other relatively nearby SNs which shipped much earlier than that, but quite a few which shipped later.

Yes - I bought it as a shooter. I have a couple of Model 1917s and a couple of Brazilians and love .45 revolvers. If the finish was pristine, I'd look for correct stocks, but think I will look for a comfortable reproduction. I will give the Pachs a try though. THanks for the observations all.

Just a follow-up. A forum member had a set of non-relieved targets for sale, and I picked them up from him. My old pictures are gone, thanks to photobucket, but here's what it looks like with the correct stocks.

I also found a NOS S&W 6" barrel from another forum member, and may end up replacing the 6 1/2" barrel if the fingerprint bugs me too much.
