Default Help me learn about my Dad's S&W Regulation Police .38

Hi Everyone,
My Dad gave me this handgun and I'd like to learn more about it.
Maybe the year it was made, value, and anything else you can share with me.
It appears to be in very good condition.
I can upload more photos if that would be helpful.
Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum. Your Regulation Police revolver seems to be in almost pristine condition if the finish is original.. 54,474 of these were made from 1917 to 1940. Your serial number would have been produced around 1920. Similar guns are going for about $500-$600 in current auctions. You can obtain a factory historical letter from the S&W Historical Foundation for $75 which will tell you when it was shipped from the factory, where and to whom and the configuration of the gun when shipped. Forms for the letter application are available from a link on this Forum. Nice family heirloom firearm. A historical letter can be kept with the gun for future heirs. Ed.

Welcome to the forum.

You have the gun correctly identified as an RP 38. Production started in 1917 and then was interrupted by the war; yours was likely produced in 1920 or shortly thereafter, as it already has 1920s style stocks.

The lighting from above creates some strange shadows, so I'm reluctant to be definite, but the gun may have been refinished. The hammer does not show its original case color, the trigger appears black, and the blue finish has some odd reflective effects that do not look like the finish on my RP 38.

Some more photos in different natural lighting from various angles might help. I'll be interested to hear others' opinions.

Very important: does not shoot the very common .38 Special cartridges.

You likely already know that , but I would be remiss in not mentioning it. The .38 S&W and the .38 S&W Special are sometimes confused with each other.

Welcome to the forum.

Hi Absalom,

Interesting observations. I'll take some additional photos with emphasis on the hammer and trigger. Knowing my Dad, I don't think he would have had it refinished. I remember this firearm being in my Dad's nightstand since I was a kid (I'm 59). I'll be interested to learn more. Thank you for heading me in the right direction!
