WW1 pic of my grandfather (S&W interest)
Have had this pic of my grandfather for some time. He was in the coastal artillery during WW1. He's posing carrying (what I think are) two model 1917's and an '03 Springfield. I never knew him, he died when my mother was young. This has however sparked my interest in finally getting a model 1917. I already have an 'O3

He wasn't going to be caught undergunned, was he?
Great picture, and I'm sure it is a family treasure. We have some of my grandfather in his WW1 Army uniform, but alas, none that include any pistols or rifles.
He was a tank mechanic in France.

From what my mother said, he was an excellent marksman and hunter. Taught her and her brothers to shoot. I remember my Mom chasing tin cans across the yard with a 22 revolver.

Great Pic!
I'd almost guess those pistols were one of the Colt 38cal 1893/95/ 1903ect versions (I'm not an authority on that confusing lot for sure!)'
The bb length and the frame & grip contour lead me to that. I could be wrong. He's certainly ready for what comes at him!
Colt for sure from the thumb latch on the one you can see that feature.

You're right! I do see it now. That is a Colt, and judging from the grip placement on the frame of the other, it looks identical. Thanks for pointing that out.

Cool photo. Agree those are likely Colt D.A. .38s (New Army and Navy), which were still substitute standard issue sidearms during WW I.
Thank you for your (and your grandfather's) service, and happy 4th!
