Welcome to the forum.

Looks like you have it pretty well identified. It is from the spring of 1943, likely March or so. It is rather interesting in that the serial is rather early for the US PROPERTY stamp on the topstrap. It is also unusual to have the flaming bomb in BOTH locations, the early butt location and the later topstrap location as well. Sounds like somewhat of a "transitional" gun stamping-wise.

How did you establish the provenance about whose gun it supposedly was? Are there documents with it? There are a lot more wartime guns with stories than with actual documentation around.

Welcome! It sounds to be a standard US Navy issue Victory Model, which came with a 4" barrel. As you know, many of these were issued to USN aviation personnel, with about 800,000 made between 1942 and '45; a slight majority of these were in .38 S & W caliber with 5" barrels, made for the British.

Was the service member a relative? Photos are always appreciated.

I am a little confused. If it is a genuine 4" .38 Special Victory issued by the Navy, it should have a "U. S. NAVY" topstrap stamping. I list many Navy-stamped Victories up through about SN V267xxx. I show a few slightly higher Navies having the "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" (not U. S. PROPERTY) stamping, the highest being in the upper V27xxxx range. So it does seem a little strange that yours has the "U. S. PROPERTY" stamp. At least one reference states that the U. S. PROPERTY stamping was uncommon until ca. V300000 (I don't necessarily agree with that, as I list numerous U. S. PROPERTY stamps below V300000). But I guess anything is possible.

In any event, V246271 should have shipped around 3/43. The closest SN on my list to yours is V2468xx which shipped in 3/43. And that one has a "U. S. NAVY" topstrap stamp.

I am thinking that a factory letter might be necessary to clear this up. How about some pictures?
