Default A Scarce 5 Inch 455 Triple lock shipped to Canada in April of 1915

Hi
In April Judy, Jerry and I did a Smith & Wesson display in Canada at Calgary.
While I was at the show I was able to pick up this Triple Lock and have it imported to the USA. The 5 inch Triple locks are very Scarce I have only seen one other 5 inch 455. This one was a single shipment to a Commercial Distributor in April of 1915. This Triple lock was owned by a Officer in the Canada Army.
With the Revolver a received his holster with his name in it. The officer was
Lt. Blake of the 50 Batt. I am in the process of getting Lt Blakes records.
There has only been one other order shipped to Canada of 5 inch triple locks.

Enjoy the pictures and the history of this Triple Lock.
Jim Fisher LM 1491

What a great specimen of the elusive 5 inch Triple Lock. What was the red tape like importing this into the states if you don't mind me inquiring?

It was a very rewarding trip to Canada! Wow Jim congratulations!

At this point I'm incredibly envious of your collection, but your collection is well deserved. You have put amazing amounts of time and effort into assembling it as well as displaying it. I'm glad that you're still able to find these guns (or they find you),but it gives the rest of us hope we may find our "grail" guns! Many people don't understand how much skill, work, luck it takes to find guns of this caliber...let alone the financial side. Keep it up!

Default into action in France 100 years ago

Hi Jim,
We talked at the show, but I did not guess you were the guy that beat me to that triple lock. Great find - thanks for adding details and pics here. I did not know about the 50th Battalion connection, but makes sense as the 50th Battalion was recruited right there in Calgary and was in France by August 1916. What great condition that TL is in for going into action with the 50th Battalion just over 100 years ago!
thanks
Tom

Jim Fisher-

Nice find! But I seriously doubt the holster went with that gun. It's meant for a .45 Colt New Service if a RCMP gun or the same or a Webley like the MK VI or Wilkinson-Webley with six-inch bbl.

The flap seems arched out of position. Maybe used with a 6.5-inch barreled TL or Second Model .455?

Hi
I am only going by what I was told when I bought the gun. He had the gun and holster for over 30 years. Lt Blake would have used what holster was
given to him by the Army as they only used 6 1/2 inch guns.
Thanks for your comment but I am going by what I was told.

Officers bought their own sidearms and leather gear. But it might be all that was available.

The muzzle end of the holster does seem wrinkled/crushed from carrying too short a barrel. But when this began, who knows?

I' ve seen photos of holsters for four-inch guns, mainly for Webley MK I-V revolvers, both flapped officers' and open-top Other Ranks holsters.

The MK VI was made standard in 1915 and longer barreled holsters became the norm. However, many officers were already buying six-inch barreled guns for years. A good example is Churchill's Model 1892 Wilkinson-Webley.

Canada may have adopted holsters for 6.5 inch barreled guns early in WWI, as many S&W's seem to have gone there.

I've read that in WW II, the S&W .38 was actually the norm for Canadian forces.

No need to wait for his records

They are probably among those already available online for free

I spent some time in Montana in the early 60's while in the Air Force. Wife and I both liked Montana just a few miles from the border (Glasgow AFB).No doubt a great state.. Wonderful people.....

I don't think Jim would mind me telling the rest of the story-
In 2016, I was contacted by a man that owned a 455 TL that he said had a 5" barrel. I figured it had been cut because I had never heard of a 5" 455. I had never talked to anyone who had ever heard of a 5" 455. I had never talked to anyone who had talked to anyone who had ever heard of a 5" 455. You get my drift here? The 5" 455 TL was totally unknown to the US collector fraternity.
So, he sent me some pics, including pics of the letter. He decided to let me sell it for him and I received the gun in time to take it to the annual meeting of the SWCA in Baton Rouge. So, 5751 is the first 5" .455 that any of us had ever heard of, and David Carroll bought it from me as soon as he saw it at the meeting. I assume Jim later bought it from him.

No. It only has patent dates on top of the barrel.
